Weird Genius Goes Global with Ancient Sumba Sounds in ‘Your Side’

Weird Genius is once again putting Indonesian heritage on the global map with their latest single, “Your Side.” By blending cutting-edge electronic production with the hauntingly beautiful sounds of Sumba, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the trio has created a track that transcends borders while staying deeply rooted in local tradition.
The foundation of “Your Side” was built during an intensive two-week residency in Sumba, where the group explored rare and endangered traditional instruments. The track prominently features the Jungga and Dungga Roro, traditional string instruments that Weird Genius hope to reintroduce to the world’s stage. To ensure the track captured the island’s true spirit, the group collaborated with traditional musician Umbu Haling, whose appearance in the intro adds a mystical, authentic layer to the production.

This release serves as a spiritual successor to their 2016 breakout “DPS.” Reflecting on their decade-long journey, the group noted, “Through this song, Weird Genius returns to its core. 10 years after Bali inspired ‘DPS,’ we went to Sumba to capture its grandeur and magical atmosphere for ‘Your Side.’”
Featuring the soaring vocals of Novia Bachmid, the single is designed to be a cinematic experience. It isn’t just a song for the charts; it is a tribute to the “endangered” sounds of Indonesia, repackaged for a global audience that craves fresh, organic textures in electronic music.

As Weird Genius continues to push the boundaries of modern music, they hope “Your Side” will become the anthem for travelers and dreamers exploring the natural beauty of the Indonesian archipelago. By bringing the ancient sounds of Sumba to the world, Weird Genius proves that the most futuristic music often comes from the deepest roots.
