Inaugural SME Showcase Connects Entrepreneurs, Investors, and Industry Leaders

The inaugural SME Market Expansion Showcase, officially presented to the business community today, brought together more than 30 curated businesses and serious industry visitors at CityStage @ KL City Walk, located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur’s Golden Triangle. The showcase went beyond a traditional marketplace, serving as a dynamic business growth platform where brands gained exposure, conducted direct sales, and forged strategic partnerships. The programme focused on key areas such as direct customer engagement, on-the-spot sales opportunities, industry forum sessions, and networking with decision-makers, creating a high-energy environment designed to help participants learn, connect, and grow.

The one-day event attracted a strong turnout of SME owners, entrepreneurs, corporate professionals, decision-makers, as well as buyers and investors. Forum talks and panel discussions explored a wide range of topics, including market expansion strategies, the adoption of artificial intelligence for digital growth, access to financing and grants, smart scaling approaches, and the sharing of entrepreneurial success stories. The showcase also provided attendees with valuable direct access to founders and key decision-makers.

In her welcome address, Tanker Collaborative Director Janet New highlighted the vital role of SMEs as the backbone of the economy, noting that the showcase aimed to build a meaningful ecosystem where entrepreneurs could access funding insights, embrace digital growth, prioritise health, and establish strategic partnerships for sustainable success. She also elaborated on the event’s objectives and emphasised the importance of maximising both booth presence and forum participation. She added that the true value of the event lies in active engagement, encouraging exhibitors to present not just products but solutions and collaboration opportunities, while urging visitors to approach each interaction with purpose and curiosity to strengthen the overall business ecosystem.

A key highlight of the forum sessions was the focus on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) and its role in measuring a company’s sustainability, ethical impact, and operational risks. Leading the ESG discussion was Stacia Lim, Director for Corporate Governance, who provided in-depth insights into integrating ESG into SME strategies and explained why it is no longer optional. She also outlined practical frameworks for adoption and noted that Malaysia’s National Sustainability Reporting Framework and amended Bursa Malaysia Listing Requirements now encompass Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, with a phased mandatory implementation leading up to 1 January 2027, significantly reshaping obligations for suppliers and SMEs.

The discussion was further expanded in a panel session featuring Lim, Shu Yi Kuek, founder of KPL Corporate Advisory Sdn. Bhd., and Alan Chin, Vice President of Group Sustainability and Strategic Partnerships at Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad, moderated by Sally Yap of PeakJob Sdn Bhd. The session explored ESG in action, including access to grants, tax incentives, compliance requirements, and green financing opportunities, while also sharing practical case studies and strategies for unlocking green loans. Lim emphasised that ESG adoption does not have to be costly and encouraged SMEs to start from their current capabilities, while Chin highlighted that sustainability is not merely a compliance exercise but a competitive advantage that can position SMEs ahead of their peers.

The discussion also touched on Malaysia’s new incentive framework, effective from 1 March 2026, which introduces a more targeted and outcome-based approach, with ESG practices as a key eligibility criterion. The framework will initially apply to the manufacturing sector, with the services sector timeline to be announced later, and offers incentives of up to 15 years.

Other forum sessions included a health talk by Nutrition Consultant Dr. JC Wong from JC Lifestyle Coaching, who shared insights on protecting heart health through proper dietary practices, including understanding good and bad fats, reducing harmful oils, adopting suitable cooking methods, and managing cholesterol naturally. He later joined Dr. Anandarajah Shanmugam, co-founder of Healthy Lifestyle Solutions, in a panel discussion that explored heart disease beyond conventional medical and diagnostic approaches.

Marketing influencer Kien Lim, founder of Attitude Ideology, presented on market expansion strategies for SMEs, covering entry into new markets, the use of digital channels, partnership models, and scaling without significant overheads. In the final panel session, Kien Lim was joined by Newspin Communication’s PR Director Marc Ng and Brand and Communication Consultant Clarence Koh to discuss content creation, public relations, social media, and the role of key opinion leaders in today’s attention economy. The session was moderated by Gina Woon, co-founder of Novela Boutique.

Throughout the day, exhibitors were also given the opportunity to deliver 90-second introductions of their businesses during networking sessions, enabling them to showcase their offerings and connect with potential partners and clients.

The event was organised by Tanker Collaborative Sdn Bhd, a dynamic event and business activation company with operations in Malaysia and Hong Kong. The company specialises in large-scale showcases, corporate events, and market expansion platforms, designing and executing high-impact experiences that connect brands, businesses, and communities. Through Moneybull, investor funds are allocated to the AHAM Aiiman Enhanced i-Profit Fund-Class B, a Shariah-compliant money market fund offering stable returns of up to 3.4% per annum*, with no lock-in period, enabling instant access to funds whenever needed.

A key feature of Moneybull is the Auto Sweep function on Webull’s platform, which automatically moves idle cash for stock purchases on Bursa Malaysia, allowing investors to maximise returns without compromising trading flexibility. There are no subscription or redemption fees, and the service does not incur additional platform charges. With rising inflation and living costs prompting Malaysians to seek low-risk, short-term investment options, Moneybull addresses gaps highlighted by the Securities Commission Malaysia’s Youth Capital Market Survey, which cited limited financial knowledge, product complexity, and accessibility constraints as barriers to investing. The initiative also aligns with Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Inclusion Framework (2023–2026), promoting secure, inclusive, and digitally enabled financial solutions.

Kenneth Chan, CEO of Webull Malaysia, noted that Moneybull represents a step toward making investing an everyday activity, bridging professional fund management and digital innovation to create a simple, affordable, and low-risk entry point for Malaysians to grow their wealth. Dato’ Teng Chee Wai, Managing Director of AHAM Capital, added that Moneybull addresses the common challenge of optimising idle cash by placing it into a low-risk, Shariah-compliant money market fund while preserving flexibility for market opportunities, empowering Malaysians to build financial resilience and long-term wealth.

To celebrate the launch, Webull Malaysia is running a promotional campaign for new and existing users. As inflation and rising living costs influence financial habits, more Malaysians are turning to secure, short-term instruments to safeguard and grow their savings. However, the Youth Capital Market Survey by the Securities Commission Malaysia highlights that 69% of young Malaysians remain hesitant to invest due to limited financial knowledge and product complexity, while 74% cite accessibility barriers such as insufficient capital and the time required to monitor investments. Moneybull aims to address these concerns by offering a simple, transparent, and accessible solution aligned with Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Inclusion Framework (2023–2026), which promotes secure and digitally enabled financial tools.

According to Kenneth Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Webull Malaysia, Moneybull represents Webull’s commitment to making investing part of everyday life. • ASEAN Takes Concrete Steps Toward Sustainability at ICAEW Summit

ASEAN Takes Concrete Steps Toward Sustainability at ICAEW Summit

ASEAN’s journey toward a sustainable, net-zero future took a decisive step forward at the inaugural ICAEW ASEAN Sustainability Summit 2025, held at the Securities Commission Malaysia. Bringing together policymakers, regulators, and finance leaders, the one-day hybrid summit — themed “ASEAN Rising: The Net Zero Playbook” — gathered more than 600 in-person delegates and 500 virtual participants from around the world to transform sustainability commitments into actionable strategies that balance growth, inclusivity, and accountability.

Alan Vallance, Chief Executive of ICAEW, opened the Summit by emphasizing the pivotal role of the accountancy profession in driving ethical and transparent sustainability transformation. “Achieving a just and inclusive transition to net zero will require collaboration across borders, sectors, and generations,” he said. Vallance noted that accountants and finance professionals are uniquely positioned as “trusted stewards of both financial and non-financial information,” whose insights can influence ethical decisions and long-term value creation for people, business, and the planet. He highlighted ICAEW’s ongoing collaborations with the Securities Commission Malaysia and the ASEAN Capital Markets Forum in implementing the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (S1 and S2) — a milestone in developing a unified regional framework for sustainability reporting and assurance.

In his keynote address, Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican, Secretary General of Treasury at Malaysia’s Ministry of Finance, represented by Dato’ Faiz Azmi, Executive Chairman of the Securities Commission Malaysia, reaffirmed the country’s strong commitment to sustainability as the foundation of the Madani Economy Framework. “For Malaysia, sustainability is not a separate policy pillar but the foundation of our economic strategy,” he stated. Through initiatives such as fiscal reforms, carbon pricing, and green budgeting, Malaysia aims to align innovation, investment, and inclusivity toward long-term resilience. The nation remains steadfast in achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, supported by the National Energy Transition Roadmap, a forthcoming Climate Change Bill, and the planned carbon tax for emission-intensive industries.

The Summit also underscored ASEAN’s dual opportunity — sustainability as both an environmental necessity and an economic growth engine. Speakers highlighted that harmonising sustainability standards, mobilising regional capital, and strengthening collaboration will position ASEAN as a competitive and credible player in the global value chain.

Elaine Hong, ICAEW Director for Southeast Asia, described the event as a milestone in connecting ASEAN’s sustainability priorities with global standards. “Southeast Asia is at the crossroads of sustainability transformation,” she said. “Our transition to net zero cannot happen in silos — it demands alignment, trust, and shared purpose.” Hong further highlighted ICAEW’s Sustainability Accelerator Programme and Sustainability and Climate Change Community, which aim to build regional capacity in carbon accounting, sustainability assurance, and scenario planning — helping professionals across ASEAN develop the expertise to lead the transition effectively.

The Summit featured five thematic sessions with experts from PETRONAS, HSBC Malaysia, KPMG, PwC, Deloitte, City Developments Limited Singapore, Olam Agri, the Malaysian Institute of Accountants, and the University of Oxford. Topics ranged from Ethics and Sustainability to Green Financing, Climate Scenario Analysis, and The Evolving Role of Finance in Value Creation. The Student–Practitioner Debate and the COFAR (Coastal Flooding Adaptation and Resilience) Challenge, co-hosted by ICAEW and the Securities Commission, showcased the role of youth and innovation in advancing climate resilience.

Alan Vallance and Dato Mohammad Faiz Azmi speak during the Ethics and Sustainability panel.

As the event concluded, participants and speakers — including Jean Bouquot, President of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) — jointly called for ethics, data quality, and transparency to remain at the heart of ASEAN’s sustainability frameworks. The consensus was clear: strong governance, consistent disclosure, and capacity building are vital to unlocking sustainable finance and long-term regional resilience.

Summarising the summit’s spirit, Vallance reaffirmed ICAEW’s commitment to ASEAN’s sustainability journey. “ICAEW stands ready as a trusted partner in shaping ethical, transparent, and impactful responses to sustainability challenges,” he said. “Together with governments, regulators, and business, we can advance a collective net-zero agenda for ASEAN and beyond.”
