  • TAPAUFEST 2022: ENJOY LENGGONG’S NATURE & BEST OF SOUTH AFRICAN INDIE MUSIC!

One of Southeast Asia’s most unusual and eclectic indie festivals returns – this time with a twist! TAPAUfest 2022 offers a thrilling combination of nature and the arts, with the goal of elevating the festival experience. Music is still and will always be at the forefront, but creator Faris has always maintained that festivals are designed to be places where memories are built. This time, these moments will take root in a magnificent area – Lenggong!

On the 22 and 23 October, TAPAUfest goes beyond what is expected of a music festival by assembling together what is essentially a camping trip at Resort Tasik Raban in Lenggong. This means the best of Southeast Asian independent music surrounded by gorgeous scenery. With the lake and the mountains almost always in view, you can see the magic of the landscape reflected upon the waters.

Founder of TAPAUfest, Ahmad Faris, has a clear vision in mind, “One of the reasons we’re doing it in Lenggong, is because we yearn for a chance to discover Malaysia outside of the cities. People post-pandemic are more adventurous! They want more than just another concert”

With #SerumpunBerpesta as the theme, TAPAUfest Lenggong is curated to the minutest details to be diverse and representative while emphasizing the collective commonalities we share as a region. 12 guaranteed-to-be-memorable acts from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore will be soundtracking your two days there!. Day 1 features .Feast (ID), Margasatwa (MY), Abangsapau (SG), Sweetass (MY), The Pinholes (SG) dan Salammusik (MY). Day 2 continues to serve more exciting performances with  Kungfu Heidi (MY), The DARE (ID), The Filters (MY), Sobs (SG), The Times (MY) dan Hindia (ID).

These performances under ‘PENTAS’ combine the veterans of the alternative scene with fresh up-and-coming acts stretching across a multitude of genres, attitudes and energy. Sunset anthems, night time party energy, all in the name of celebrating nature – you name it, the curation has it! TAPAUfest is also proud to be the Malaysian debut of many Indonesian acts, namely Hindia, The Dare and .Feast! Even Malaysian acts are promising a new twist in their repertoire. Hip hop staple Kungfu Heidi, for example, will be performing with the band Serbuk Cheese, serving a new instrumental sheen to her already fiery discography. The Singaporean acts who will be performing are also no less exciting, from the pop-yeh-yeh nostalgia of The Pinholes, to the kain-pelekat swagger of Abangsapau, to the dreamy indie of Sobs!

The music stage will only begin at 5pm, allowing time for you to explore the myriad of things Lenggong has to offer. It’s a chance to have a chill time while discovering new activities. There’s no need to rush setting up your camp. Soak in the fresh air, walk around the site, and have a great time!

This year’s edition of ‘BENGKEL + LAYAR’, which starts at 10am and ends at 4pm, we’ve collaborated with arts & cultural non-profit, Kakiseni! Don’t miss out on the chance to catch screenings by indie filmmakers and learn new skills and knowledge from workshops and talks – use this opportunity to “tapau some knowledge” on top of having a good time.

One principle TAPAUfest adheres to is in elevating the local economy. Whether it’s in the display of craftsmanship or the accessibility of a marketplace called ‘WARUNG’, TAPAUfest creates a space for local flavours, ensuring a rejuvenating time while you shop around for merch, records and artworks from your favorite artist and more, as TAPAUfest also collaborates with Kedai Serba Serbi to bring you variety beyond simply music. There will also be a DJ booth to keep things pumping and alive while you shop and hang out!

When purchasing a ticket to a concert, the value of your experience starts when the artists start performing till they leave the stage, but with TAPAUfest, the experience starts the moment you leave your house! The TAPAUfest playlists are curated to introduce you to the massive world of Southeast Asian indie music  to keep you and your friends company on your 3 hour scenic journey to Lenggong from Kuala Lumpur.

A festival should be more than just about music. It’s about the people you meet, and the memories you keep. Lenggong itself is already an exciting site, as a UNESCO Heritage location which houses one of the most complete skeletons of an ancient man in Southeast Asia called the Perak Man (approximately 11,000 years old). Experiencing the beauty and the vibe in a magical place like Lenggong AND good music means people are not just paying for a concert, but an immersive, unforgettable time.

Ahmad Faris also adds, “We truly appreciate Majlis Daerah Lenggong’s continuous effort and active investment in making TAPAUfest happen in their own backyard. TAPAUfest would also not be possible without the support of CENDANA who really showed their faith in the indie community once again. Thank you as well to Waka, Ipoh Social Club, Santuy Travellers, Kadiak, Versussika, PBUY, Outsiders Bike, and Anbot for believing in us to elevate Lenggong and Southeast Asian indie arts, community and culture!”

Pre-Sale tickets are available now with Solo Daily Passes going for RM165 (1 ticket for either Day 1 or Day 2), Solo Weekend Passes going for RM320 (1 ticket for both Day 1 and Day 2) and Geng Weekend Passes going for RM1240 (4 tickets for both Day 1 and Day 2).

  • THE LATEST CANCER TREATMENT, NK CELL THERAPY, IS DEBUTTED BY MALAYSIA-SOUTH KOREA COLLABORATION

The Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) was signed at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia between Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd (HUKM). UKM can develop MYJ1633, which contains NK cells and NK T cells, thanks to this arrangement (NKT Cell). It has the potential to be utilised to treat cancer patients.

There are more than 48,000 new cancer cases in Malaysia as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) and this number will double by 2040. This will ultimately burden the country’s healthcare system and have a direct impact on the emotional, physical, and financial health of cancer patients. Currently, there are more than 150 oncologists in Malaysia making the ratio of 1 specialist doctor to 220,000 patients. In this regard, experts need the latest methods to provide appropriate treatment to cancer patients and NK Cell is poised to be one of the preferred measures.

NK Cell is part of the human immune system that plays an important role in destroying tumor cells and virus-infected cells. Due to this, research has been conducted and proved that these cells have the potential to be used for cancer immunotherapy treatment (Choi et al., 2019). As a result, ImmunisBio Co. Ltd.  (Korea) has developed and patented a technology to activate and expand NK and NKT cells in the laboratory. The final product is known as MYJ1633. Through this agreement, UKM is able to produce MYJ1633 for the Malaysian market through NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd.

UKM Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation Affairs, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Wan Kamal Mujani said, “I sincerely hope that this collaboration will provide a significant impact to the society and bring benefits to the country. Private-public partnerships are now regarded as the new frontier for higher learning institutions as we now have to embark on more tangible, deliverable and lab-to-market innovative research studies to produce more clinical products and services. We also hope that more medical products for the treatment of various diseases can be manufactured under the certified cGMP lab and CTERM UKM.”.

Chief Executive Officer of NK Biocell Sdn. Bhd., Dr. Park Ji-Youn said, “This milestone marks the joint efforts in the field of science, technology and medicine. We are able to produce MYJ1633, which is safe and reliable. In 2018,  it was certified and approved by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare of Japan. This benefits Malaysians especially cancer and autoimmune patients. MYJ1633 will also be registered under the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) with the help from CTERM UKM. I sincerely believe that both parties will benefit from this collaboration.”.

This agreement has the potential to be a new hope for cancer patients in Malaysia who are seeking treatment other than chemotherapy. Patients have options according to their ability and suitability ensuring continuous treatment.

This ceremony was also attended by the Dean of the UKM Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor, Deputy Dean (Network and Alumni) Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dr. Marina Mat Baki, Head of Department of Center for Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (CTERM) UKM, Prof. Associate Dr. Mohd Fauzi Mh Busra, head of departments and health experts in Malaysia.

  • COVID-19 EXTEND TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR REDUCING THE IMPACT OF 2019 ACT 2020 [ACT 829] ACHIEVING RECOVERY AND USING THE AUTHORITY TO INTRODUCE A SPECIAL MORATORIUM

Nearly 100 captains of industry attended the FMBA’s Second Annual General Meeting, which was presided over by His Excellency Dato’ Sri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, and was held on September 27, 2022, at the Tun Rahah Auditorium, Menara Pernas, Tower 7, Avenue 7, Bangsar South City, No. 8, Jalan Kerinchi, 59200 Kuala Lumpur (Economy).

In the Annual General Meeting, we have heard views, complaints, problems, feedback and suggestions from affiliated members who attended the Second Annual General Meeting from around the country who are striving to recover in their respective industries as a result of being affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the threats to the Industry that have yet to be resolved by the parties involved.

Among those that have been discussed is the TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR REDUCING THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) ACT 2020 [ACT 829] which will cease to be effective on 22nd October 2022, and we are of the opinion that when the Act has been stopped, the businesses that have been affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic will no longer receive special protection against their creditors.

The matter has clearly been proven when the Act was almost withdrawn last year has seen banking or financial institutions have started pressuring businesses to get back the amount of loans owed without looking and/or considering the current economic situation of the business until some have taken steps to declare the Company Director for the business bankrupt. The matter has affected the score of the financial position of those businesses when they have been listed in credit reporting agencies and/or financial information systems as well as listed with the Malaysian Insolvency Department and it will take time to settle the debt and could not been involved in any future business. This will also affect the economy when businesses that can recover and return to competitiveness have to close. However, with the Temporary Measures For Reducing The Impact of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (Covid-19) Act 2020 [Act 829], Banking or financial institutions cannot take legal action to declare bankruptcy on those businesses, even payments may be suspended under the said Act.

Furthermore, this Act is to provide special protection to those businesses from Banking or financial institutions, property owners and also enable them to postpone the execution of private contracts or performance bonds as mentioned in “Section 7 Schedule – List of Contract Categories” of the Act 829. In the Annual General Meeting, the Affiliate Members have unanimously agreed with an Emergency Resolution in requesting the Malaysian Government to exercise its authority to introduce a SPECIAL MORATORIUM to give space to their businesses to strengthen the financial flow of their respective businesses who is still struggling to recover.

THEREFORE, After evaluating and considering all the responses from the members of the Federation of Malaysian Business Associations (FMBA), we call on the Malaysian Government to EXTEND THE ENFORCEMENT OF THE TEMPORARY MEASURES FOR REDUCING THE IMPACT OF CORONAVIRUS DISEASE 2019 (COVID-19) ACT 2020 [ACT 829] and INTRODUCE A SPECIAL MORATORIUM to give space to their businesses to re-strengthen the financial flow of their respective businesses that still cannot recover due to the current economic situation. Business entrepreneurs NEED SUPPORT AND NOT PRESSURE in jointly driving their respective businesses towards recovery and excellence in line with the Government’s efforts for and on behalf of FEDERATION OF MALAYSIAN BUSINESS ASSOCIATIONS (FMBA).

The curated platform, created as a one-stop shop for buying and selling shoes on the secondary market, not only makes it simpler for its audience to navigate the crowded market, which can be downright overwhelming, but it also lowers the risk of being burned by replicas or simply receiving the wrong product entirely.

Founded by Ryan Ng, a 22 year old techpreneur and an avid sneakerhead, and he said, “We’ve taken into account the many recent shifts in the reselling culture – both locally and globally. A great deal for a pair of shoes today could be terrible tomorrow. This is where CNCRD comes in to ultimately cement our vision to provide the best retail e-commerce experience for our users. And for CNCRD to also provide an offline experience for our customers to buy and sell the latest, most coveted sneakers in the best way possible is our way of taking the business to the next level. On top of the online platform, CNCRD has also simultaneously launched its brick and mortar showroom at The Five, Damansara Heights to bring the best of both worlds – the scalability of technology to sellers and the intimacy of a physical space to our customers. We believe this hybrid shopping experience is the way to go”.

Hailing from Muar, Ryan was introduced into this scene when he first came to Kuala Lumpur for college. “It was 2018 and I was turning 18 at the time, there was a buzz amongst my friends about the Jordan 1 Nigel Sylvester’s and it was the first pair that sparked an interest to dig deeper into the scene. I was living on a basic allowance and all I could do was admire it. The first pair I’ve ever ‘flipped’ was a pair of UltraBoosts and my best friend of 15 years was my first ever customer. It was a very ecstatic feeling, that catapulted and snowballed to selling my first 5, 10, 20 pairs of sneakers”, explained Ryan further.

It was with this realisation, that what he did could be a business, that propelled him to team up with his good friend, Bryan Ong to incorporate a partnership. With the aim of creating an ecosystem that is transparent for sellers and a whole new experience for consumers, CNCRD was finally established in Q4 of 2021, to bridge the gap between sellers and buyers seamlessly. “In time, we hope to expand our product category to include apparel, collectibles and many more. But for now our focus is to firm up the system, educating our audience, creating the awareness and to utilise data to maximise sales for sellers and cater to a more curated shopping experience for end users”, quips Bryan.

Naming Eddy Lu, CEO and Co-Founder of GOAT and Kevin Ma, CEO of HYPEBEAST as their major source of inspiration, CNCRD resides on the mission to grow sustainably as a company into business segments of similar synergies while constantly providing value for its users. In the long run, CNCRD aims to position itself as a tech conglomerate and to venture into various segmentations of technology and other digital business landscapes. To strengthen the team, Ryan and Bryan have roped in Ric Wang as a co-founder and Creative Director of CNCRD.

“Together with Bryan, Ric and our whole team at CNCRD, I hope to work and lead CNCRD to cement its position as an industry leader both locally and regionally, to grow sustainably and to maximise our shareholders’ returns. The executive team utilises data-driven decision to ensure that our growth is sustainable and investments in different business segments internationally are collaboratively appropriate. I believe very strongly that the chemistry and synergy of the team has what it takes to contend and to build an exciting culture that are both innovative and efficiently in its troubleshooting – eliminating ambiguity and short-term solutions.

“As it is with the sneaker culture, it is also paramount for us to create a “CNCRD tribe”. We have planned out various activities that aims to serve multi-disciplinary creatives by working together on cultivating our physical space. CNCRD’s creative direction serves as a narrative to radiate multi-disciplines of culture ranging from fashion, art, design all the way to food and sports. The launch of our showroom recently is a testament of this as it was attended by the who’s who of the KL scene from various industries.

I also have to mention here that we are in the midst of developing our CNCRD app (due by Q2 2023) but in the meantime, do visit our website; and if you are in the Damansara Heights area, come visit our showroom and check out what CNCRD is all about!”, enthused the effervescent Ryan.
