  • SECURE RM120MIL MULTINATIONAL INVESTMENTS FOR LOCAL RETAILERS & FRANCHISORS

Through the Franchise Expo Malaysia International Retail and Franchise 2023 (FE MIRF 2023), the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) has set a goal of securing RM120 million in investments for local retailers and franchisors after securing RM100 million in investments from foreign companies in 2022. With this initiative, the retail and franchise sectors’ contribution to the expansion of the national economy is to be strengthened.

Previously known as the Malaysia International Retail and Franchise (MIRF) exhibition, its sixth edition this year observed its official rebranding to Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023. The exhibition is the latest world-class stage for companies to gather and showcase their best offerings, with the intention of exporting their products and services internationally. This coincides with the theme of FE MIRF 2023 – “Everyone Wins”, establishing itself as an all-new platform with boundless business opportunities in Malaysia and across the world.

Through its program, a total of 1,110 franchises have been registered under the previously known Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) in 2022, while 68 local brands have successfully penetrated the international market and are now available in over 70 countries – generating a total sum of RM100mil in multinational investments through its last edition. Notable retail and franchise brands that contributed significantly to this success include Marrybrown, Bask Bear Coffee, MyKori, Gigi Coffee, and LaundryBar, among others.

Mr. Ken Phua, Deputy President of MRCA said, “FE MIRF is returning with its new tagline Everyone Wins because simply it is a platform meant to benefit both parties not only in the Retail Sector but also parties that are providing services to the Retail Sector. The name also shows that the expo places Franchise as a Key Element and is set to be the leading largest franchise exhibition in Malaysia, with over 400 booths, and 4 halls. We will be welcoming the participation of retailers from across the globe – this will allow us to improve and strengthen our relationship with different nations and encourage investment and business development between Malaysia and abroad.”

As the organizer of the largest retail and franchise expo in Malaysia, MRCA is proud to announce that they are back stronger than ever to spearhead the country’s franchise development. This year, FE MIRF 2023 is expected to attract 15,000 visitors from across the ASEAN region, in contrast to last year’s 10,000 visitors. In addition to that, FE MIRF 2023 will boast a whopping 450 booths across four exhibition halls for retail franchises and licensing brands to operate from.

Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023 welcomes the participation of all retail franchises and licensing brands from Malaysia, China, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, USA, India, Thailand, Indonesia, etc. – to develop bilateral trade relationships, while strengthening existing partnerships. MRCA strives to keep achieving its objective of maintaining the strongest network of affiliates in the region to bring the industry to greater heights.

Through endorsements garnered from the government and strategic partners, MRCA is confident that Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023 will play a significant role in revitalizing the country’s economy through the development and growth of the franchise sector.

Ms. Christine Tan, Organizing Chairperson of FE MIRF 2023 said, “With our extensive capabilities and experience, we understand what it takes to expand internationally, and we are prepared to assist brands in expediting their global expansion. I am confident that the rebranding and expansion of this year’s FE MIRF 2023 will bring much-added value for our local retailers and franchisors, and we look forward to aiding them in generating overseas investments into Malaysia.”

Participants and delegates will be given opportunities to build brand awareness, forge connections with new business partners, and accelerate business growth in Southeast Asia. FE MIRF 2023 will also provide services such as business matching, career matching, on-ground engagement, round table discussions, and more for participants and delegates to meet with potential franchisees from all over Malaysia and overseas. As such, MRCA invites more franchisees to take advantage of the growth opportunities at Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023.

For the first time ever, a Best Booth Competition will be held for all exhibitors to show off their best designs. Judges will score the booths after the opening ceremony to determine the winner; The Best Booth Award will be presented during the Networking Dinner on 7 July, with a Grand Prize worth RM15,000.

Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023 will be held at Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) from 7 to 9 July 2023. For more information on Franchise Expo MIRF (FE MIRF) 2023, visit https://mirf.my/ or its Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/MIRF.MRCA

  • Sarawak will be the first Legacy Capital in Malaysia and Borneo, according to Sarawak’s Premier

Sarawak will establish and position itself as Malaysia and Borneo’s first legacy capital for business events in the aftermath of Indonesia’s new capital city development on Borneo, announced Sarawak Premier, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, at the 10th Anak Sarawak Awards hosted by Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak).

The industry’s role now is to drive sustainable, purpose-driven business events and strategically prioritise topics that fall within the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030. As explained by the Premier, the old narrative of measuring business event success purely by its return on investment and economic values is no longer relevant.

Instead, the new narrative of Sarawak’s business events would be to measure according to its return on objectives and influence on sector and community development, environmental and social sustainability, and promoting good governance in addition to its economic viability. The business events industry, one of the six priority economic sectors listed in the PCDS, is poised to play a pivotal role in achieving the strategy’s mission.

“This is Sarawak adopting transformative thinking — first-tier thinking,” said The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. “Legacy impact is Sarawak’s value proposition beyond business events, but the proposition for all sectors and industries. We can no longer confine our thinking to just Sarawak. We must adopt a broader perspective that incorporates the opportunities present in Borneo. Indonesia’s new capital Nusantara is already developing and once it emerges, our business events industry should be ready to seize opportunities.”

“To support these measures, the Sarawak Government is already planning to develop new infrastructure,” continued the Premier. “Borneo Convention Centre Kuching will be expanded; Miri will have its own convention centre, and Sarawak is establishing its own airline to improve our connectivity around the region. We will also expand the manpower at Business Events Sarawak, who will drive these changes. The agency will take on a critical role and funding will be increased to support sustainable, purpose-driven business events.

The Premier also announced that the current Anak Sarawak Awards will be retired in favour of a bigger and bolder programme to complement Sarawak’s vision of becoming a legacy capital. The new programme is titled “Borneo Inspires Legacy Awards” and will encompass fresh categories and welcome nominations from all over the world.

Meanwhile, speaking at the same event, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts revealed that the industry’s performance is surpassing expectations. “In 2022, Sarawak exceeded its initial target by 111% to secure 100 business events worth RM RM326.3 million in total economic impact — surpassing the target by 196%. Delegate expenditure is estimated at RM117.3 million and tax revenue of RM19.6 million, while 26,000 job opportunities are expected to arise,” said The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. “We won every international bid last year at 100% — an increase of 15.8% in 2020 and 7% in 2021 — indicating that we have a strong value proposition in legacy impact.  Echoing the Premier, the new narrative of business events will cast a wider net to secure impacts beyond tourism.”

Behind Sarawak’s transformation is a decisive strategy that is consistent with its strategic direction on legacy impact. “We are launching the Legacy Impact Master Action Plan in Germany on 23 May at IMEX Frankfurt — one of the world’s largest business events trade shows” announced Amelia Roziman, BESarawak’s CEO. “One component of the action plan is to recognise the innovation and social impact of the business events industry, hence the new award programme as announced by Premier.”

The 10th Anak Sarawak Awards is Malaysia’s first business events award programme. This year was themed “Passion Inspires Legacies”, a celebration of achievements and unwavering commitment. Out of the 27 nominees shortlisted, 9 winners were revealed. The winners are:

    1. Young Leader Award – Hii Mei Ching (Borneo Plux Sdn. Bhd.)
    2. Journalism Awards
      • Print/Online Award – Priscilla Tawie Anak Sulok (New Sarawak Tribune)
      • Broadcasting Award – TVS (Sarawak Media Group)
    3. Business Events Awards
      • Convention of Excellence Award – 8th International Forum on Industrial Bioprocessing 2019 (Curtin University Malaysia)
      • Corporate Meetings and Incentive Excellence Award – Spiral Eventz Management Sdn. Bhd.
      • Meeting Venues of Excellence – Borneo Convention Centre Kuching
      • Products and Services of Excellence – E.E.M. Event and Exhibition Management Sdn. Bhd.
    4. Sarawak Legacy Award – Better Air Quality Conference 2018 (The Clean Air Forum Society of Malaysia – MyCAS)
    5. Outstanding Achievement Award – Dr. Mohd Raili bin Suhaili (SEGI University – Sibu Clinical Campus)

To ensure that all submissions are evaluated fairly and with credibility, national and international organisations were engaged in the judging process. The judges are from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak (MTCP), International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), Malaysian Association Of Convention & Exhibition Organisers & Suppliers (MACEOS), Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA), Sarawak Tourism Federation (STF), Sibu  Business Events Committee (SBEC) and Miri Business Events Committee (MBEC).

  • New Xperia 1V and 10V smartphones from Sony have been released

Sony unveils the Xperia 1V, the first flagship smartphone in the world featuring a newly created stacked CMOS picture sensor with 2-layer Transistor Pixel. The Xperia 1V is loaded with Sony’s cutting-edge technology, addressing the high-level demands of creators while also helping aspiring creators who wish to film or transmit their material with pride.

“We continue to prioritise the needs of our customers and the new Xperia 1V allows for the next level of content creation, viewing experience, gaming performance, battery life and audio capabilities,” says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “The opportunities and needs for smartphones are increasing and with the Xperia 1V the possibilities for creation by photo and video are truly endless.”

    Elevating Content Capture

The Xperia 1V is raising the bar with its’ newly developed image sensor which depicts rich colours and textures of people, landscapes, and scenes in even dark locations. Due to the combination of the low-light performance, which is approximately double compared to the previous model[i] and the high-speed multi frame overlay procession technology of the Xperia 1V, it is possible to shoot a noise resistant photo with a wider dynamic range that is equivalent to a full-frame camera[ii].  The 24 mm lens on the back of the Xperia 1V equipped with a 2-layer Transistor Pixel stacked CMOS image sensor “Exmor T for mobile” which is about 1.7 times larger than previous image sensor.  In addition, the 85-125 mm (F2.3-F2.8) optical zoom lens enables bright portraits with little distortion.

S-Cinetone, known by cinematographers[i], has been adjusted and installed for mobile. Since the texture of the human skin can be beautifully expressed when shooting, it is possible to record an impressive cinematic image as it is, without colour grading. In addition, the new sensor has approximately three times of saturation signal level2 compared to the conventional sensor, and unique image quality processing suppresses noise that tends to occur in dark scenes, resulting in beautiful images with soft colours.

The Xperia 1V has a multitude of functions including colour presets such as Creative Look, also found in Alpha series cameras, and high-performance real time AF (auto focus).  Various colour settings are preset, such as colourful flowers and clear blue sky, or creating a soft, transparent finish. Xperia’s high-performance Real-time Eye AF[ii] and Real-time tracking4 allows shooting with the focus on the eyes of a person or a specified subject. With AI depth that analyses distance information, even distant subjects can be clearly focused. Additionally, high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames per second with AF/AE[iii] tracking is newly available, so no moment will be missed.

    Improved Vlog Experience

Xperia 1V fits all creators’ needs with the Product Showcase Setting, which is a popular function in Sony’s VLOGCAM series and shifts the focus on the camera to the product, instead of reviewer’s face, when shooting.  Additionally, a new voice priority mic is placed near the rear camera.  Even when in a busy outdoor location, the creator’s voice is clearly recorded, so it makes an easy transition from shooting to distributing the video. When doing a YouTube™ live stream via the video recording function “Videography Pro”, chats from viewers can be viewed in the comment section simultaneously, allowing for immediate interaction[i] with viewers in real time. The user interface also supports vertical shooting, so you can shoot content in any orientation, either vertically or horizontally[ii].

    Immersive Experience

Packed into the flagship Xperia smartphone is a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz[iii] and less blur. The powerful and low-noise speaker amplifier improves the spread and depth of the sound, and the extension of the low and high frequencies, creating a more dynamic and clear sound. Xperia 1V offers an authentic viewing experience of movies and music without a need for an additional speaker.

On the backside, it has a functional tactile design that uses a uniquely developed texture glass. Combined with the fine slits on the side, it provides a stable grip and prevents from slipping when you hold the smartphone during shooting or viewing.

    Best in Class Gaming Performance

The game assist function “Game Enhancer” provides visual and auditory support for game players.  In addition to simply playing, players can also livestream their playing scene on YouTube. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform and Elite Gaming[iv] optimises the experience of shooting, viewing and playing games with superior level.

Long Lasting Battery Power and Powerful CPU

Despite using 4K display, approximately 20 hours[i] of continuous video playback is available with a powerful 5,000mAh battery.  It supports wireless charging, 30 minutes quick charge up to 50%[ii], and furthermore, Xperia’s unique charging optimisation technology supports users with a battery that maintains 80% or more of its maximum capacity[iii] even after 3 years.

By improving power consumption and heat dissipation, Xperia 1V achieves both high performance and durability, and possible to shoot for a long time while suppressing heat generation. Equipped with the Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform, the power efficiency of the CPU has been improved by approximately 40%[iv] compared to the previous model. The power consumption during camera operation has been improved by approximately 20%, and the volume of the heat diffusion sheet has been increased by approximately 60% for the heat dissipation performance of the main unit.

    Accessibility and Sustainability

With continued efforts to provide more accessibility, Xperia 1V includes a function in the Photo Pro feature that uses sounds to inform users the horizontal and vertical measurement of the screen. The Sony Group has set an environmental plan “Road to Zero” aiming for zero environmental load by 2050. In order to achieve this, we are taking action while setting medium-term environmental targets in stages. As part of these mid-term environmental goals, we aim to completely eliminate plastic packaging materials for newly designed small products by 2025.  Xperia 1V ‘s plastic-free package[i] is comprised of Sony’s unique Original Blended Material, which is made from bamboo, sugar cane fibers, and recycled paper collected from the market.  We are also working to reduce the amount of virgin plastic used inside the main unit. Some elements, both internal and external, of the main unit use SORPLAS™, a flame-retardant recycled plastic developed by Sony that uses up to 99% recycled materials. For more details, please visit: www.sony.net/xperia-eco

Style Cover with Stand for Xperia 1V (XQZ-CBDQ

The Xperia 1V exclusive cover has a grip on the bottom of the main unit to enhance the shooting experience. In addition to the conventional horizontal stand, it supports vertical stand, making it easy to use not only for watching videos but also for live distribution and video chat. The back of the cover incorporates the textured design applied to the back of the “Xperia 1V” body, so that the original design of the device is not compromised even when the cover is attached. Three colours[i] are available to match the body.

    Pricing and Availability

The Xperia 1V will be available in Malaysia from 3 July 2023 with the SRP of RM6,399.

  • vivo Launches Android 14 Developer Beta Programme for vivo X90 Pro and iQOO 11

vivo, a global technology company, said today that Android 14 Beta 1 will be available for the vivo X90 Pro and iQOO 11 smartphones in Southeast Asia beginning May 11. The programme gives vivo developers early access to the newest Android experience, allowing them to test out new features and enhance app compatibility. The new Android 14 is expected to provide numerous significant improvements to the user experience, including improved device resource management, longer battery life, increased security and privacy, and additional personalization and accessibility capabilities.

Optimized device resource management and improved battery life

Android 14 will simplify the smartphone’s background processes by optimizing how applications are activated, improving the phone’s resource management and battery life. One of the key upgrades is that scheduling exact alarms, or actions that need to happen at a precise time, are denied by default, as they can significantly consume the device’s resources, especially battery life. Therefore, apart from clocks or calendar apps, all newly installed apps for Android 14 must request this permission from the user before scheduling exact alarms. The app can do this by prompting users to enter their preferences in the settings screen. However, developers are encouraged to carefully evaluate the application usage scenarios and choose a more flexible alarm alternative as much as possible to reduce resource consumption and improve the user experience.

In addition, Android 14 further standardizes the use of foreground services by reserving them for the user’s highest-priority tasks, helping improve resource consumption and battery life. Applications must specify appropriate foreground service types, and they must declare a specific permission, based on the foreground service type. Therefore, developers need to clearly define and specify the application’s backend work intent and clarify which usage scenarios are appropriate for foreground services.

    Enhanced security and privacy

In addition to improved battery life, Android 14 provides a more secure device environment and gives users more control to protect personal information. It introduces a photo selector feature that is more privacy-friendly and reduces the need for apps to directly obtain file read and write permissions by system takeover.

Android 14 will feature a new permission confirmation pop-up that allows users to grant partial access to photos and videos by selecting a range of media files. Alternatively, the user can choose to allow or deny the app access to all media files.

To address malware threats which typically target older API levels to bypass the security and privacy protections introduced in newer Android versions, starting with Android 14, a minimum installable target API level is applied, preventing apps with API Levels below 23 from being installed.

To safeguard the smartphone further, Android 14 is introducing restrictions to implicit and pending intents, safer dynamic code loading, and additional restrictions on starting activities from the background.

    Further personalization and accessibility features

Android 14 further optimizes the personalization and accessibility features, such as regional preferences set-up for temperature units, the starting day of the week and the way numbers are presented based on the user’s individual needs and preferences. In terms of accessibility, non-linear font scaling to 200% has been added. Non-linear scaling ensures that all text remains readable, preserving the proportional hierarchy between elements of different sizes.

vivo has been proactive in supporting developers to adapt and optimize their apps for the latest Android operating system and deliver the optimal user experience. Starting from May 11, developers are invited to visit the vivo Developers website and join the Android 14 Beta Program for vivo X90 Pro and iQOO 11 in Southeast Asia.
