  • Rising AI Resource Consumption Unsustainable; NTT DATA Report Urges Action and Proposes Solutions

A recent white paper from NTT DATA, a global leader in AI and digital technology services, emphasizes the urgent need to integrate sustainability into AI development and deployment to mitigate the growing environmental impact of the technology. Titled Sustainable AI for a Greener Tomorrow, the paper highlights how the increasing computational demands of AI—particularly in training large language models, running inference pipelines, and maintaining always-on services—are driving substantial energy consumption, water usage for data center cooling, e-waste generation, and rare earth mineral extraction for hardware. Experts predict that AI workloads could account for over 50% of global data center power usage by 2028. NTT DATA stresses that while these environmental consequences are significant, AI also offers opportunities to address them, such as optimizing energy grids, reducing emissions, modeling environmental risks, and enhancing water conservation.

The paper outlines key strategies for sustainable AI, urging organizations to prioritize efficiency alongside traditional performance metrics like speed and accuracy. It calls for measurable environmental impact metrics, including energy consumption, carbon emissions, and water footprint, and advocates for lifecycle-centric approaches that consider hardware production, deployment, maintenance, and disposal. Best practices recommended include using green software engineering, aligning AI workloads with renewable energy availability, leveraging modular and upgradable components to extend hardware lifespan, and employing responsible recycling and refurbishment methods. The report also underscores the importance of shared accountability, requiring collaboration among hardware manufacturers, data center operators, cloud providers, software developers, policymakers, investors, and consumers.

NTT DATA’s white paper warns that fragmented assessments and inconsistent metrics remain a barrier to meaningful progress, with many organizations focusing narrowly on energy or emissions without accounting for other critical factors. By implementing a comprehensive, end-to-end redesign of AI systems, organizations can reduce resource consumption while harnessing AI’s transformative potential. The report ultimately positions sustainable AI not just as a corporate responsibility, but as a strategic opportunity to create lasting value, strengthen organizational capabilities, and safeguard environmental resources for the future. The full white paper, along with insights on sustainability services, is available on NTT DATA’s website.

  • Bahaya Tersembunyi Penyakit Jantung Dalam Kalangan Lelaki Malaysia Berumur 30-an

Bahaya Tersembunyi Penyakit Jantung Dalam Kalangan Lelaki Malaysia Berumur 30-an

Dr Lim Eu Jack Pakar Perubatan Kecemasan, Pusat Perubatan Sunway, Bandar Sunway

  • “From Prohibitions to Progress: Malaysia’s Path to Winning the Fight Against Smoking”

“From Prohibitions to Progress: Malaysia’s Path to Winning the Fight Against Smoking”

Malaysia has long aimed to become a smoke-free nation, yet roughly one in five adults—around four million people—continue to smoke despite decades of health regulations and taxation measures. Smoking remains a significant public health concern, while the shift to vaping presents both challenges and opportunities for harm reduction. However, Malaysia’s regulatory framework remains fragmented, and the potential of alternative nicotine products is largely untapped. Lessons from Europe underscore the limitations of prohibition-based approaches: countries like Ireland, the Netherlands, and Denmark have seen minimal declines in smoking rates despite strict laws and high taxes. In contrast, Sweden adopted a tobacco harm reduction (THR) strategy, promoting non-combusted nicotine products, which has brought them close to achieving a smoke-free status, demonstrating that regulated alternatives can produce tangible results. Scientific evidence supports this approach; studies by the UK’s Royal College of Physicians show that vaping is at least 95% less harmful than smoking, as the primary health risks arise from the thousands of toxic chemicals released by burning tobacco, not nicotine itself. In Malaysia, smoking-related illnesses claim over 27,000 lives annually and burden the healthcare system with billions of ringgit in costs. Yet national policy, including the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024, fails to differentiate between combustible cigarettes and less harmful alternatives such as e-cigarettes. Advocates argue that a risk-proportionate regulatory framework—one that combines access to safer alternatives with robust measures to prevent youth uptake—could accelerate progress toward a smoke-free Malaysia. Countries like the UK and New Zealand offer examples of integrating vaping into cessation programs while balancing safety and accessibility. By adopting a harm reduction approach, Malaysia can help smokers transition away from the most dangerous forms of nicotine consumption, improving public health outcomes while maintaining compassion for those struggling with addiction. Sweden’s experience shows that eliminating the harm from smoking, rather than nicotine entirely, is both feasible and effective—offering Malaysia a proven roadmap to reduce smoking prevalence, save lives, and achieve a healthier future.

  • Seven Major Vulnerabilities Could Expose ChatGPT to Data Breaches and Account Hijacking

Seven Major Vulnerabilities Could Expose ChatGPT to Data Breaches and Account Hijacking

Critical “HackedGPT” Vulnerabilities Expose ChatGPT Users to Data Theft and Hijacking

Security researchers at Tenable, an exposure management company, have uncovered seven critical vulnerabilities in OpenAI’s ChatGPT-4o, some of which persist in ChatGPT-5, collectively dubbed HackedGPT. These flaws bypass the model’s built-in safety mechanisms, putting users at risk of privacy breaches and the theft of sensitive information, including stored chats and long-term memories. While OpenAI has remediated some vulnerabilities, several remain unaddressed, leaving exposure paths open to potential attackers.

The vulnerabilities represent a new class of AI attack known as indirect prompt injection, where hidden instructions embedded in external websites or online content can trick ChatGPT into performing unauthorized actions. The flaws particularly affect ChatGPT’s web browsing and memory features, which process live data and store user interactions. Tenable researchers highlighted two primary attack vectors: “0-click” attacks, triggered simply by asking a question, and “1-click” attacks, initiated by clicking a malicious link. A particularly concerning method, Persistent Memory Injection, allows attackers to plant instructions in ChatGPT’s long-term memory, creating lasting threats that can expose private data across multiple sessions until manually cleared.

The seven vulnerabilities include indirect prompt injection via trusted sites, 0-click search compromises, 1-click prompt injection, safety mechanism bypass, conversation injection, hidden malicious content, and persistent memory injection. Exploiting these flaws could allow attackers to insert hidden commands, steal sensitive data from connected services like Gmail or Google Drive, manipulate outputs to mislead users, or continuously exfiltrate information from stored memories.

According to Moshe Bernstein, Senior Research Engineer at Tenable, “HackedGPT exposes a fundamental weakness in how large language models judge what information to trust. Individually, these flaws seem small, but together they form a complete attack chain—from injection and evasion to data theft and persistence. AI systems can be turned into attack tools that silently harvest information from everyday chats and browsing.”

Tenable recommends that organizations treat AI tools as active attack surfaces, monitor for manipulation or data leakage, reinforce defenses against prompt injection, and establish governance and data-classification controls. The research underscores the importance of continuous testing, safeguards, and responsible use to ensure AI systems protect users rather than compromise them.
