‘Kata Hati’: Modern Romance Meets the Price of Fame in New Malaysian Film

For the past few years, the Malaysian box office has been heavily dominated by high-intensity genres, leaving local moviegoers immersed in a steady stream of action blockbusters and horror flicks. Breaking away from this trend, an upcoming cinematic release is making a deliberate turn toward something softer, offering a refreshing return to the human heart.

Kata Hati, a modern romantic comedy co-produced by Wayangworks Sdn. Bhd. and Filmscape Sdn. Bhd., is scheduled to hit theaters nationwide on 4 June 2026. The film sets out to explore what happens when the fragile spark of a modern romance collides head-on with the heavy, unyielding price of fame.

Directed by Nadiah Hamzah, the project marks a sharp and intentional tonal shift from her previous hard-hitting thriller, Motif. Hamzah notes that she wanted to craft a narrative that feels lighter on the surface but still carries significant emotional weight—a film that allows audiences to laugh, but also recognise themselves in the quiet, unscripted moments of life. She was deeply drawn to the concept of love existing in a hyper-visible world that is constantly watching, a contemporary reality where showing vulnerability becomes both a massive risk and an absolute necessity.

At its core, the narrative charts the unexpected collision between two entirely different worlds. Ayra Natasha (played by Nia Atasha) is a rising actress on the very brink of major stardom, a trajectory fueled by her role in a large-scale action film alongside her celebrity boyfriend, Zayn Mikhail (Fazziq Muqris). Ayra’s life looks picture-perfect until a deeply frustrating and humiliating incident at a prestigious awards nomination night goes viral, causing her carefully constructed image to fracture. In the immediate fallout of this public crisis, she crosses paths with Imran Firdaus (Yusof Hashim), an e-hailing driver who exists entirely outside the suffocating noise of celebrity culture. When Ayra’s sister and talent manager, Maya (Scha Alyahya), orchestrates a strategic arrangement that brings Imran into Ayra’s daily operational life, a calculated PR decision slowly transforms into an intimate connection that neither of them can fully control.

The choice to develop a romantic comedy in the current cinematic climate was a highly deliberate move by the filmmakers. Executive Producer Juliana Foo highlights that because audiences have been immersed in intense, high-octane genres for so long, there is a distinct space and a profound need for stories that bring people back to something more human. She describes Kata Hati as a modern fairy tale, but one that remains entirely grounded in emotional reality.

Producer Muhammad Bahir echoes this sentiment, revealing that the story was born directly from firsthand encounters and observations within the entertainment circuit. He emphasizes that the production team has always been fascinated by the stark contrast between who people appear to be on screen versus who they are in real life, prompting them to explore the reality behind the glamour through a grounded, entertaining story.

This commentary on the price of fame is cleverly mirrored in the production’s star-studded ensemble cast, which blends fresh contemporary talents with seasoned icons of Malaysian cinema. Alongside the leading trio of Nia Atasha, Yusof Hashim, and Fazziq Muqris, the film features strong supporting performances from Scha Alyahya, Taqim Zaki, and social media personality Norreen Iman. Adding even more cinematic weight to the film are special cameo appearances by industry giants, including Beto Kusyairy, Nabila Huda, Liyana Jasmay, Nina Kho, and Shweta Sekhon.

Filmed across the contrasting urban streets of Kuala Lumpur and the coastal landscapes of Kuantan back in August 2025, Kata Hati promises to blend humour, vulnerability, and emotional truth. For audiences ready to witness a contemporary love story that pulls back the curtain on the glitz and glamour, the film debuts on 4 June 2026, with more updates available on the official website, filemkatahati.my.

“Guangdong in Frames, Souls in Resonance — Chinese Film Week” Opens in Kuala Lumpur, Showcasing the Creative Spirit of Guangdong Cinema

The Guangdong in Frames, Souls in Resonance — Chinese Film Week officially opened this evening at GSC MyTOWN, Kuala Lumpur, marking the Malaysian stop of its Southeast Asian tour. The week-long event shines a spotlight on five remarkable films produced in Guangdong, each offering a window into the region’s creative energy, artistic depth, and evolving voice in contemporary Chinese cinema.

The opening ceremony brought together key representatives from both China and Malaysia’s film industries, including the Guangdong Film & Television Service Platform, the Guangzhou Film Association, and Beyond Frozen Films. From Malaysia, the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), local partner Blackflag Sdn. Bhd., and Official Cinema Partner GSC International Screens joined the celebration. Also in attendance were filmmakers, cultural figures, and members of Malaysia’s film community — all united in supporting the growing cinematic exchange between Guangdong and Southeast Asia.

Delivering the keynote address, Zhao Meng Fei, Director of the Guangdong Film & Television Service Platform and President & Secretary-General of the Guangzhou Film Association, expressed gratitude for Malaysia’s warm reception. “Film is a universal language that transcends borders and connects hearts,” he said. “China and Malaysia share deep cultural roots — from the echoes of Cantonese dialects to the aroma of tea shared across tables. These five films reflect Lingnan’s humanity and its love for life. Through light and shadow, we hope to let friendship and culture flourish even more vividly.” Zhao also highlighted that the upcoming 2025 Guangzhou Film Expo, scheduled for December, will continue to strengthen collaboration between the two nations by remaining “market-oriented, audience-driven, and internationally connected” — part of China’s broader vision to enhance its global cinematic presence.

The evening culminated with the Malaysian premiere of The Sun Rises on Us All by Cai Shangjun — the first Guangdong-produced film ever selected for the Main Competition at the Venice Film Festival, where actress Xin Zhilei took home the prestigious Volpi Cup for Best Actress. Director Huo Meng, whose acclaimed feature Crossing the Border – Zhaoguan is also part of the lineup, was present to engage with Malaysian audiences and share insights into his filmmaking journey.

Running from 12 to 16 November 2025, Guangdong in Frames, Souls in Resonance — Chinese Film Week features a diverse line-up that encapsulates the creative breadth of Guangdong cinema. The programme includes Cai Shangjun’s The Sun Rises on Us All, Huo Meng’s Crossing the Border – Zhaoguan, the Cantonese opera-inspired White Snake, the heartfelt Teochew family drama Back to Love, and the visually stunning animated feature Fall Into the Mortal World.

All screenings will take place exclusively at GSC MyTOWN, Kuala Lumpur. Tickets are available through GSC ticketing kiosks, the official website gsc.com.my, and the GSC Mobile App — inviting Malaysian audiences to experience the artistry, humanity, and cultural resonance of Guangdong’s modern cinema.
