Marking a major milestone in the evolution of Malaysia’s electric vehicle (EV) landscape, BYD Malaysia and Sime Motors the official distributor of BYD vehicles in the country announced the arrival of the BYD Zhengzhou, a roll-on/roll-off (RORO) carrier vessel, at Northport, Port Klang. This marks the vessel’s maiden voyage to Southeast Asia and reinforces BYD’s long-term commitment to expanding its presence in the region.
The BYD Zhengzhou, which has a maximum capacity of 7,000 fully built units, represents a strategic expansion in BYD’s global logistics capability. Its arrival in Malaysia forms part of a broader regional delivery route that also includes the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, before the vessel returns to China.
As the seventh addition to BYD’s growing fleet of purpose-built shipping vessels, the Zhengzhou embodies the company’s commitment to strengthening its export strategies and enhancing the reliability of its global supply chain. With China continuing to lead the world in EV exports, BYD is taking critical steps to gain greater control over key aspects of vehicle delivery a move that sets the brand apart in an increasingly competitive market.
Jeffrey Gan, Managing Director of Sime Motors, Southeast Asia, described the event as a major step forward in the strategic collaboration between BYD and Sime Motors. “This is a significant milestone in our partnership with BYD, symbolising confidence and the growing potential of Malaysia as a vital EV hub,” said Gan. “With the enhanced regional supply chain provided by the BYD carrier vessel, we are now assured of shorter delivery times, enabling us to provide better customer satisfaction making this a win-win situation for all involved.”

He further emphasised that the increased logistical efficiency prepares the brand for higher volumes of EVs in the near future, supporting Malaysia’s national EV adoption goals. “This is just the beginning,” he added, “as we build a dynamic ecosystem that spans retail, after-sales, and customer education all crucial elements in our journey toward cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable mobility.”
Eagle Zhao, Managing Director of BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the vessel’s significance in accelerating BYD’s global ambitions. “The carrier vessel plays a key role in heightening BYD’s global ambition and reinforces our ties to Malaysia, which we view as instrumental to our growth in Asia Pacific,” Zhao said. “Built to enhance delivery capabilities, the BYD Zhengzhou ensures faster and more reliable deliveries directly to our customers here.”
With China’s outbound automotive market surging, the need for specialised carriers like the BYD Zhengzhou has become essential. Zhao noted that by investing in its own shipping fleet, BYD gains a more secure and stable platform to manage transport resources efficiently enabling scale and consistency in global delivery.
The RORO method employed by the BYD Zhengzhou which allows vehicles to be driven directly on and off the vessel offers significant time and cost advantages over traditional container shipping. This increased efficiency is a crucial asset for BYD Malaysia and Sime Motors as they aim to deliver vehicles more reliably and at greater speed, bolstered by a growing national footprint of more than 35 BYD retail outlets, with a target of 60 outlets by the end of 2026.
As the EV market continues to evolve rapidly, the arrival of the BYD Zhengzhou in Malaysia signifies not just a delivery of vehicles, but the arrival of a stronger, faster, and more resilient future for electric mobility across the region.
