Digital Arts Meet Kayan Heritage at Linge Belawan Exhibition

KUCHING – Indigenous heritage meets new media as Linge: Belawan prepares to open its doors at Makeramai Makerspace, Plaza Merdeka, from 30 November through 6 December 2026. The upcoming digital arts exhibition breathes new life into the historic Kayan warrior epic of Belawan, providing a compelling model for how intangible cultural heritage can bridge traditional communities and contemporary creative technologies without sacrificing authentic roots.

Cultural Preservation Backed by State and Industry Partners

Developed by young cultural bearer Adrian Jo Milang in artistic collaboration with Sonia Luhong Wan, the initiative earned seed backing from the Sarawak Youth and Creative Industry Fund (SYCIF) under the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Sarawak. The production is further anchored by The Tuyang Initiative, an award-winning social enterprise focused on sustaining indigenous creative livelihoods. According to Juvita Tatan Wan, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of The Tuyang Initiative, the project serves as an inspiring blueprint for how youth can innovate within their cultural practices while preserving core longhouse traditions.

In addition to state backing, Linge: Belawan brings together a broad coalition of local industry partners and community stakeholders, including the Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation (SDEC), Filamen, Blend Visuals, Telang Usan Hotel Kuching, Indigo Studios, and the Persatuan Kayan Sarawak (Bintulu Branch).
