The Asian Institute of Chartered Bankers (AICB) has introduced FSF Xcel, Malaysia’s first industry-wide digital skills assessment platform for the financial sector. The platform aims to benchmark workforce capabilities and accelerate upskilling across the industry, supporting Malaysia’s shift towards a more adaptive, sustainable, and future-ready financial ecosystem.
FSF Xcel builds on the Future Skills Framework introduced in 2024 by translating the framework into structured, industry-validated assessments. These assessments allow financial institutions to identify skill gaps, map learning and career pathways, and strengthen talent strategies for the future. Covering 159 job roles and 157 critical skills, the platform evaluates both technical expertise and behavioural competencies. Developed in partnership with Accendo Technologies, a Malaysian AI-powered talent intelligence company, FSF Xcel combines global best practices with local insights to enhance Malaysia’s financial talent pipeline.
The financial sector contributed an estimated 6.7 percent to Malaysia’s GDP in 2024 and employs nearly 167,000 professionals, making it a key driver of economic growth and stability. Aligned with Bank Negara Malaysia’s Financial Sector Blueprint 2022–2026, FSF Xcel supports the transition to a digitally fluent and innovation-driven workforce. The platform provides real-time analytics and a shared competency framework to guide workforce planning, benchmark capabilities, and advance professional development across the sector, reinforcing Malaysia’s ambition to build talent readiness for a digital economy.
Edward Ling, Chief Executive of AICB, stated that FSF Xcel is more than a skills assessment platform, describing it as a catalyst for transformation. The platform equips employees and employers with data-driven insights to identify, measure, and strengthen capabilities, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional excellence. YBhg. Datuk Dr Yvonne Chia, Chairperson of the MyMAHIR Future Skills Talent Council for the financial sector, highlighted the urgency of the initiative, noting that nearly 40 percent of today’s skill sets are expected to evolve or become obsolete by 2030. She emphasised that FSF Xcel enables financial institutions to respond with agility and reinforces Malaysia’s position as a regional hub for skilled and innovative financial professionals.
Sharma Lachu, Founder and CEO of Accendo Technologies, expressed confidence that the partnership with AICB would drive the creation of an industry-wide Digital Talent Passport, allowing individuals and organisations to thrive amid continuous change. The initiative is informed by AICB’s 2025 Workforce Baseline Study, which gathered input from 99 financial institutions, achieving a 68 percent response rate. The study revealed strong demand for a standard digital assessment platform, with 96 percent of respondents interested in adopting such a tool to close skill gaps in line with the FSF. It also found that approximately 40,000 employees may see their roles evolve due to automation, highlighting the need for targeted upskilling and reskilling.
The findings reflect global trends identified in the World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report 2025, which predicts that 39 percent of current skill sets will become outdated by 2030 and points to skill gaps as a major barrier to business transformation in Malaysia. FSF Xcel is scheduled for progressive rollout across financial institutions starting in the fourth quarter of 2025, with AICB collaborating closely with Bank Negara Malaysia, Accendo Technologies, industry associations, and learning partners to ensure effective adoption and implementation.
As MAGGI® marks over 50 years of nourishing Malaysians, the brand continues to expand its purpose beyond the kitchen with its flagship empowerment programme, Wanita Cukup Berani (WCB). Now in its fourth year, WCB carries forward its mission to empower Malaysian women to discover their true potential, embrace new opportunities, and take fearless steps toward personal and community growth through food.
Rooted in the spirit of Tak Kenal, Tak Cinta, the programme has created a strong support ecosystem that offers mentorship, digital and business training, and community networking to help women grow beyond the programme. Since its inception, WCB has empowered over 4,000 women across Malaysia and aims to reach 10,000 women while nurturing at least 20 new food entrepreneurs by 2026.
Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Dato’ Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri, praised the initiative for aligning with national priorities to empower women, reduce inequality, and enhance digital literacy. She expressed pride in seeing how MAGGI®’s Wanita Cukup Berani brings these goals to life through practical skills training, continuous support, and the encouragement for women to try something new. According to her, once women realise their potential, they begin to love their journey and gain the courage to go further.
The Minister also commended MAGGI® for collaborating with organisations such as Google, TikTok, and the Ministry of Health to advocate healthier eating. She highlighted that real change happens when the government, private sector, and communities come together, walking side by side in a shared vision of progress.
Nestlé Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Juan Aranols, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to enhancing quality of life and contributing to a healthier, more sustainable future. He emphasised that brands have a responsibility to uplift communities and that Wanita Cukup Berani exemplifies this belief through its focus on women empowerment. He added that partnerships with platforms like Google and TikTok open up new digital opportunities for women, demonstrating how public–private collaborations can produce initiatives that are impactful, sustainable, and scalable.
Reflecting on MAGGI®’s long-standing legacy, Business Executive Officer of MAGGI® Malaysia and Singapore, Ms. Ivy Tan Link Cheh, shared that the brand has evolved from being a trusted kitchen companion to becoming a true empowerment partner. She noted that food has always been more than just nourishment—it represents love, creativity, and even a path to self-worth and financial independence, as seen through the stories of WCB alumni.
Ms. Tan further explained that when WCB was launched four years ago, many women already possessed the skills and determination but often lacked the confidence to take the first step. The programme was designed to fill that gap, reminding women that they are indeed cukup berani—brave enough to try, learn, and grow. She credited the success of WCB to its dedicated mentors, including Anne Idris, Alleena Abdullah, Chef Naem, and Ven Luan, who guide participants through both online and offline learning modules.
The recent WCB 2025 launch underscored the importance of digitalisation, mentorship, and skills development in transforming women’s lives. Through inspiring alumni stories and expert insights, the event showcased MAGGI®’s continued dedication to making learning accessible, fostering women’s potential, and contributing to nation-building. The programme stands as a testament to how, when women are equipped with confidence, guidance, and the right tools, they uplift not only themselves but also their families, communities, and the nation as a whole.
Have you ever heard of someone being hospitalised after a fall? What may seem like a small incident can, for many, change everything. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide, claiming an estimated 684,000 lives each year. Despite how common they are, falls are often underestimated, with many only seeking medical help when symptoms worsen.
“We have had patients walk into the Accident and Emergency Department after a fall, talking and moving normally, only for scans to reveal serious internal injuries such as bleeding in the brain or abdomen,” shared Dr Cyrus Lai Sin Nan, Consultant Emergency Physician at Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV). “Just because there is no broken bone doesn’t mean there is no problem. Some injuries, particularly in the head or abdomen, may not show symptoms immediately—and that timely response can make all the difference.”
While falls are often associated with the elderly and remain one of the top reasons for Accident and Emergency Department visits among older adults, they are also common among children, working adults, and athletes. Dr Cyrus explained that falls rarely occur due to a single cause; instead, they typically result from a combination of environmental, lifestyle, and medical factors.
Most incidents happen at home, particularly in bathrooms and staircases where wet or uneven surfaces make slipping more likely. A sedentary lifestyle further increases the risk, as reduced muscle strength and balance make falls easier to occur. Underlying health issues such as poor vision, osteoporosis, or low blood pressure also heighten vulnerability, especially when combined with medications that cause dizziness or instability. With all these factors in play, even a seemingly minor fall can lead to serious consequences.
Given how falls can cause anything from minor injuries to severe trauma, having access to a trauma-ready emergency department is crucial. At SMCV, trauma cases are managed through a multidisciplinary approach, uniting physicians and surgeons from various specialties to deliver comprehensive care. This coordinated system ensures that even hidden injuries are detected and treated promptly, reducing complications and improving recovery outcomes.
A seemingly minor bump to the head, for instance, can cause internal bleeding within the brain, potentially leading to loss of consciousness and long-term complications that affect physical, cognitive, and emotional functions. These may include headaches, seizures, memory loss, poor concentration, mood changes, and difficulty managing daily activities or work. In severe cases, traumatic brain injury (TBI) may increase the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a progressive brain disease caused by repeated trauma.
Although falls can affect anyone, their consequences are most severe among the elderly. A single fall can lead to hip fractures that often require surgical procedures, such as total hip replacement, to restore mobility and quality of life. This concern is expected to grow, as hip fracture cases in Malaysia are projected to rise 3.5-fold by 2050—from around 6,000 to more than 21,000 cases. “When an elderly person sustains a hip fracture from a fall, total hip replacement is often the best treatment,” Dr Cyrus noted. “It not only repairs the trauma but also helps them return to daily activities with less pain and better function.”
Dr Cyrus also emphasised that seeking medical attention immediately after a fall can make a crucial difference in recovery. He warned against relying on home remedies, a common misconception among many. “Drinking something sweet may make a person feel better temporarily, but it doesn’t treat any injury,” he explained. Similarly, applying ointments or massaging bruised areas right after a fall can worsen swelling or bleeding. Instead, he advised resting, applying ice, and getting checked if pain or swelling persists. “Early assessment allows us to identify hidden injuries and stabilise patients before complications set in. The longer patients wait, the harder recovery becomes.”
With falls being one of the most frequent reasons for emergency visits, timely access to proper care is essential to prevent complications and promote better recovery. In line with this, SMCV has expanded and upgraded its Accident and Emergency Department and increased its bed capacity to enhance accessibility, improve patient flow, and strengthen readiness for critical care. The upgraded facility features a redesigned layout with improved triage areas, additional treatment and observation bays, inpatient beds, and faster on-site testing to ensure patients receive prompt and coordinated attention.
“Accident and Emergency care is often the first line of defence in saving lives. Our expansion reflects SMCV’s commitment to providing swift, efficient, and compassionate care for every patient who walks through our doors, because when it comes to emergencies, every second counts,” said Dr Wee Tong Ming, Medical Director and Consultant Emergency Physician at SMCV.
As Malaysia’s population continues to age and lifestyles grow increasingly sedentary, the risk of falls remains a pressing public health concern. Early recognition, timely emergency care, and continued public awareness can prevent many of these incidents from leading to life-altering complications. Through its expanded Accident and Emergency Department, increased bed capacity, and multidisciplinary expertise, Sunway Medical Centre Velocity reaffirms its commitment to keeping the community safe by ensuring every patient receives swift, comprehensive, and compassionate care when it matters most.
