KAO Malaysia & Universiti Malaya Unite for Breakthroughs in Skin Health

KAO Malaysia and Universiti Malaya (UM) have announced the successful completion of the “Skin Protection, Life Perfection” campaign with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), formalising their joint commitment to advancing public health through skincare education and research.

As part of this collaboration, KAO Malaysia, through its leading skincare brand Bioré, is contributing RM50,000 in funding across two flagship initiatives led by Universiti Malaya. The first initiative is a community engagement programme titled “Beautiful Change Begins with Us,” managed by the Universiti Malaya Community Engagement Centre (UMCares). This programme focuses on hygiene awareness, environmental sustainability, and positive mental wellness for teenagers, adults, and children. The second initiative is a research collaboration titled “Innovative Clean Skincare Formulations for Skin Protection and Healthy Living,” which will be conducted by the Faculty of Science at Universiti Malaya. Both projects are part of KAO Malaysia’s 1% pledge of Bioré product sales to support local skin health research.

Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, President of KAO Malaysia, highlighted the significance of the collaboration, stating that the partnership reflects KAO’s commitment to going beyond product innovation to create meaningful, science-driven impact in the communities it serves. He emphasised that skin protection is not just a personal care choice but a public health responsibility, and expressed pride in working with Universiti Malaya to advance this vision for the benefit of all Malaysians.

This MoU marks KAO Malaysia’s first academic partnership with an educational institution in the country. Through this collaboration, KAO and UM aim to bridge science and public awareness to position skincare as a fundamental pillar of community health. Guided by the shared vision of “Skin Protection, Life Perfection,” the campaign initially began as a community awareness initiative and has now been extended through KAO’s funding support. This will enable Universiti Malaya to strengthen its community engagement programmes and enhance its research efforts with new resources and equipment for long-term impact in skin health and wellness education.

Associate Professor ChM. Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Director of UMCares, expressed her gratitude for the collaboration, noting that the MoU opens new opportunities to translate academic research into practical solutions. She added that the partnership will drive advancements in clean formulation development while fostering greater community engagement.

The MoU was officially signed between Mr. Yamazaki Hirobumi, President of KAO Malaysia, and Professor Dato’ Seri Ir. Dr. Noor Azuan Abu Osman, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Watsons Malaysia and included a symbolic donation handover to mark the shared commitment of all parties toward meaningful collaboration.

The “Skin Protection, Life Perfection” campaign was originally launched in May 2025 in partnership with Watsons, championing skin protection as the key to confidence. Powered by Bioré’s “Cleanse. Protect.” philosophy, the initiative combined expert education, engaging consumer experiences, and a pledge of one percent of product sales to support local research. With Universiti Malaya and skincare professionals lending their expertise, Watsons helped bring the campaign to life nationwide with exclusive rewards and member perks.

With the signing of the MoU, the partnership now moves forward with a long-term commitment to advancing skin health, ensuring that the collaboration between KAO Malaysia, Universiti Malaya, and Watsons will continue to benefit communities across Malaysia for years to come.

  • KAO Malaysia Unleashes GUARD OUR FUTURE Initiative to Combat Dengue with Powerful Community Clean-Up in Selangor Hotspot – 2024

KAO Malaysia Unleashes GUARD OUR FUTURE Initiative to Combat Dengue with Powerful Community Clean-Up in Selangor Hotspot – 2024

KAO Malaysia has teamed up with the residents of Flat PKNS Taman Dato Harun, a prominent dengue hotspot in Selangor, to combat the dengue outbreak at its source. This community-focused initiative is part of the ongoing GUARD OUR FUTURE project, launched in June alongside the introduction of the new Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum in Malaysia. The cleanup effort was organized in collaboration with the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ), Takeda Malaysia, and Impactlution.

“Dengue fever continues to be a significant public health challenge in Malaysia, especially with the recent increase in cases in Selangor. It is crucial that we join forces with local communities to address this pressing issue. This cleanup event is a key component of our GUARD OUR FUTURE project, and we are hopeful that it will be a major step forward in our mission to safeguard Malaysians from mosquito-borne diseases,” said Mr. Nishimaki Akira, President of KAO Malaysia.

KAO Doubles Down on Its Commitment to Solving Social Issues

Back in June, KAO Malaysia announced the expansion of its GUARD OUR FUTURE project to protect future lives from mosquitoes.

GUARD OUR FUTURE is centered on innovative product technology and formulation that provides a cover protection shield, keeping mosquitoes away from people’s skin and thus preventing mosquito bites. Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum, was first introduced in Thailand two years ago and launched in Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong this year.

The new Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum is a mosquito repellent based on a repellent technology that makes the skin surface repulsive to mosquitoes causing them to fly away before biting it – the goal is not to kill mosquitoes, but to reduce the infection caused by mosquitoes by protecting the skin.

In line with KAO Malaysia commitment to solving social issues according to its vision to protect future lives, the mosquito repellent joins its Bioré brand lineup of products that protects skin from a variety of environmental stress factors like UV rays, intense heat and infectious diseases. As part of GUARD OUR FUTURE in Malaysia, KAO Malaysia has pledged to match a donation of Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum units with the number of active dengue fever cases in the state of Selangor in 2023. This will add up to over 61,080 units of the product worth RM15.90 per 50g unit, amounting to RM971,172 in total.

Together with this latest community clean-up effort, KAO Malaysia is thus committed to following through on its multi-faceted approach to fighting dengue fever in Malaysia, as part of its ESG strategy. Dubbed the Kirei Lifestyle Plan (KLP), KAO’s ESG strategy describes ambitious goals for the future and provides a detailed direction for activities focusing on consumers. While the Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum focuses on preventing mosquitoes from landing on the skin, its community-level activities aim to reduce the burden of dengue fever by creating a more sustainable environment.

Cleaning-Up Together with Partners and the Local Community

A 100-strong turnout comprising volunteers from KAO Malaysia, MBPJ, Takeda Malaysia, Impactlution and the local community were briefed and allocated cleanup tools such as trash pickers, gloves, and garbage disposal bags. The cleanup commenced at around 9AM, and participants were seen being hard at work, whether it be identifying potential breeding sites, or clearing stagnant water.

Impactlution, one of the partners involved in the clean-up effort, is an Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) consulting firm specialising in community and environmental projects. Representatives from the company gave a short talk after the clean-up to raise awareness on waste management and its impact on the Aedes mosquito population, while a MBPJ representative followed up with a brief rundown on the importance of promoting dengue education and awareness.

Takeda, a global healthcare company, has joined the fight against dengue by offering educational talks on symptoms and management. With the recent availability of its dengue vaccine in Malaysia, Takeda has pledged to work with the public, private, and local communities to help reduce the burden of dengue. To round off the day, a donation of Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serums was made by KAO Malaysia to the Flat PKNS Taman Dato Harun community.

About Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum’s Product Technology

The new Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum is a mosquito repellent based on a repellent technology that makes the skin surface repulsive to mosquitoes. Focusing on the actions of mosquitoes when they land on the skin, KAO Malaysia has developed a non-greasy mosquito repellent with a light texture similar to body lotion that can expand widely and provide coverage on skin, as if having protection skin shield to protect from mosquitoes.

The product protects against mosquitoes without being sticky and is as comfortable to apply as serum. By preventing mosquitoes from landing or staying on the skin at all, the technology’s mechanism differs from that of conventional insect repellents which typically uses volatile active ingredients consumers may be sensitive to such as diethyltoluamide (DEET) or Picaridin.

The new Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum offers up to 8 hours of protection and will be available in two delightful fragrances (Fresh Lavender and Sweet Blossom) at a Recommended Retail Price of RM24.90 for a 100g tube. Bioré GUARD Mos Block Serum will be available for purchase at major pharmacies and retailers nationwide.

As a part of the GUARD OUR FUTURE initiative, KAO Malaysia is teaming up with the Selangor State Government and Takeda Malaysia to carry out a range of activities focused on safeguarding the well-being of Malaysians from mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, such as dengue fever.

“In light of the ever-changing global landscape and the emergence of new challenges, it is crucial that we actively pursue our ESG strategy, the Kirei Lifestyle Plan, to achieve a sustainable society while also improving our business and mitigating risks,” stated Masahide Nishida, President of the Skin Care Business at KAO Corporation, during the collaborative partnership between KAO Malaysia, the Selangor State Government, and Takeda Malaysia.

KAO Finds a Harmonious Blend of Business and Addressing Social Challenges

Mosquitoes are responsible for the most fatalities worldwide. According to recent data from the German online platform Statista, approximately one million people lose their lives each year due to infectious diseases transmitted by mosquitoes. Even though the majority of these individuals are located in Africa, mosquito-borne infectious diseases continue to be a significant social concern in Southeast Asia. Children, in particular, are highly susceptible to dengue fever.

The GUARD OUR FUTURE project aligns with KAO’s comprehensive environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) strategy, known as the Kirei Lifestyle Plan (KLP). This plan sets forth ambitious goals for the future and provides a clear roadmap for KAO’s ESG initiatives, with a strong emphasis on meeting the needs of consumers. The KLP operates by strategically integrating ESG into KAO’s business, in line with the K27 objectives of addressing significant social challenges while pursuing business expansion and taking the lead in achieving a sustainable world.

Dengue fever has posed a significant societal concern in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia for an extended period of time. Furthermore, the expansion of mosquitoes’ habitats and the rise in cases of dengue fever have been attributed to factors such as global warming and urbanisation, according to Mr. Nishimaki Akira, President of KAO Malaysia. “In line with KAO’s dedication to its strategy, we strive to combine all efforts and build on the commitment of protecting our future by controlling and eliminating the dengue threat in our communities.”

In line with KAO’s commitment to solving social issues according to its vision to protect future lives, its Bioré brand offers a lineup of products that protects skin from a variety of environmental stress factors; based on the idea that the skin is the “human interface” that connects people to other people and to society and that is a part of everyday life. Based on the idea of applying an additional, protective layer on the skin’s surface, Bioré offers a range of skin protection guarding against environmental stressors like UV rays, intense heat and infectious diseases.

KAO will promote GUARD OUR FUTURE project to achieve its future commitment, with the goal of becoming an essential company in a sustainable society through company-wide endeavors to protect future lives. This product is representative of KAO’s commitment to solving social issues according to its vision to protect future lives.
