  • The Learning Curve, Part 5: Overcoming Multicultural and Multilingual Differences

The Learning Curve, Part 5: Overcoming Multicultural and Multilingual Differences

Learning about Samsung Research centres across the globe, we delve into the world of Galaxy AI and its role in empowering users to unlock their full potential. Galaxy AI has expanded its language support to include 16 different languages. This means that more individuals can now enhance their language skills, even without an internet connection. The on-device translation feature, which includes Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist, enables users to conveniently translate text in various situations. However, the process of AI language development may be of interest to you. During our recent trip to China, we had the opportunity to explore the significance of collaborating with fellow AI experts. In this particular instance, our focus shifts to Brazil as we delve into the intricate dynamics of cross-cultural and cross-border teamwork, all in the pursuit of making Galaxy AI accessible to a wider audience.

Brazil, a country with a population of over 203 million, is known for its rich cultural diversity and varied traditions. The official language spoken in Brazil is Brazilian Portuguese. Meanwhile, Latin American Spanish is used by 22 neighbouring countries.

Teaching Galaxy AI to discern and distinguish regional differences posed several challenges due to the intricate variations in both Brazilian Portuguese and Latin American Spanish, which are widely spoken. That’s why Samsung R&D Institute Brazil (SRBR) joined forces with Samsung experts from Mexico, along with science and technology institutes SiDi and Sidia, and assembled a talented and diverse team to take on the challenge.

    Lower Barriers, Higher Understanding

The team extensively utilised numerous sources and employed a blend of machine learning and language processing tools to enhance the AI model’s ability to accurately identify and interpret speech, written texts, and regional nuances. However, the local terminology and references to well-known individuals, such as sports teams, celebrities, and bands, can differ significantly from one region to another. Furthermore, various words can be used to convey the same idea. Language models require localised data to develop a thorough grasp of various languages for translation purposes. However, these variations can pose challenges.

As an example, the word for swimming pool varies across different Spanish-speaking countries. In Mexico, it is referred to as “alberca,” while in Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, it is called “pileta.” Meanwhile, in Colombia, Bolivia, and Venezuela, the term for swimming pool is “piscina,” which is also used in Brazil but with a slight tonal variation. Colombians use the word “chévere” to describe something cool, while Mexicans prefer to use the term “padre.”

The team successfully tackled the significant challenges in AI language understanding and learning by developing more extensive language models, enhancing processing tools, and fostering collaboration across different locations and time zones.

Adapting and testing the model involved careful consideration of local slang and various ways of speaking. This required a close collaboration between the SRBR quality assurance (QA) team and development teams, according to Mateus Pedroso, Senior Manager and Head of Software Quality Lab at SRBR. Due to the time zone differences between SRBR, the QA team in Mexico, and the management team in Korea, new communication channels and processes were established to ensure alignment of results and progress sharing. This diverse collaboration sparked a vibrant exchange of ideas and solutions for Galaxy AI.

    Communicating Success

Samsung’s commitment to open collaboration was evident in this regional project, which embraced an iterative approach and harnessed cutting-edge technology on a global level. In order to overcome linguistic and cultural barriers, the SRBR team had to gather and handle large quantities of data, constantly enhancing and perfecting their audio and text sources.

The teams established specific areas of responsibility to maximise the utilisation of the diverse skill sets available in the company’s Latin American offices. The SRBR development team played a crucial role in the project, receiving guidance from Samsung’s headquarters and working on updates to enhance the AI model. They also conducted extensive tests for various use cases.

According to Leandro Flores de Moura, Software Development Manager at SiDi, the testing phase involved a lot of communication and collaboration with QA teams to enhance the user experience. Each adjustment made during this phase required additional testing and review. “The language capabilities of Galaxy AI owe their success to effective communication and collaboration, in addition to technical expertise,” remarks Nathan Castro, a QA Test Developer at SiDi.

    A Roadmap for Culture

What makes Galaxy AI particularly interesting for everyone involved is the fact that this wasn’t merely a language project. To them, language is a cultural guide that provides valuable insight into people’s heritage and identity.

“For SiDi’s QA team, this was an endeavor that will change the world by enabling cultures to come together and overcome the difficulty of communicating in different languages,” adds Estefanía Castro Suárez, Test Developer at SiDi. “Knowing we were part of this fills us with pride and motivation.”

“The way the SRBR team collaborated exemplifies what Galaxy AI sets out to achieve—making the world a smaller place through communicating, sharing and interacting with people, even those who speak different languages,” concludes Pedroso. “This capability will only grow as more languages come on board with Galaxy AI.”

  • The Learning Curve, Part 4: A New AI Model and an Evolving Language

The Learning Curve, Part 4: A New AI Model and an Evolving Language

As Samsung continues to lead the way in providing top-notch mobile AI experiences, we take a look at Samsung Research centers across the globe to understand how Galaxy AI is empowering users to reach their full potential. With support for 16 languages, Galaxy AI allows more individuals to enhance their language skills, even without an internet connection, thanks to on-device translation in features like Live Translate, Interpreter, Note Assist, and Browsing Assist. But what exactly goes into developing AI language capabilities? In our previous visit to Vietnam, we explored the process of preparing data for training AI models. This time, we delve into how teams have made Galaxy AI a distinctive offering for both the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong.

The rapid growth in AI tools that use large language models (LLM) has been seen worldwide, and China is no exception. With Baidu’s ERNIE Bot and Meitu’s MiracleVision emerging as popular choices in China, Samsung R&D Institute China partnered with both companies to help build Galaxy AI features for the country.

Samsung R&D Institute China in Guangzhou (SRC-G) and Beijing (SRC-B) focused on providing Mandarin speakers in China with a seamless Galaxy AI experience, even though the underlying technology may differ significantly. The team utilized the specialized resources of Chinese dialects from external partners and developed a distinctive Galaxy AI solution for China.

“We have the advantage of blending global best practices with China’s local practices, as well as creating new features and constantly improving them through daily communication with Chinese consumers,” says Hairong Zhang, Software Innovation Group Leader at SRC-G. “With rich development experience from the Galaxy S24, I’m proud of how our team cooperated with local Chinese AI companies such as Baidu and Meitu to provide a solution that resonates in China.”

At the beginning, the teams had to acclimate to each other’s working styles and iron out the initial kinks of information asymmetry. Daijun Zhang, Head of SRC-B, established a task force to ensure the project followed the development schedule and moved quickly toward its goals.

Thanks to the Beijing team’s experience in generating large-scale models and successful collaboration with third-party partners, all the generative AI features were successfully launched in China. The result is a solution that has local relevance and market-specific features such as Touch to Search.

Expanding on Chinese to Develop for the Cantonese Dialect

Mandarin Chinese for mainland China was introduced to Galaxy AI when the Galaxy S24 was released in January 2024. However, the task for Samsung R&D Institute China was still incomplete. The team was given the responsibility of creating the AI model for Chinese in Hong Kong (Cantonese), a dialect that builds upon the previous work done for Mandarin but introduces a whole new set of language features to tackle.

In developing for Cantonese, the China R&D team faced major cultural challenges that it needed to respond to in order to fully support localization for the market. The first cultural phenomenon is the two sets of systems for writing and speech. Hong Kong locals use grammar and expressions similar to Mandarin when writing but adopt a completely different colloquial grammar when communicating daily. Also, Cantonese has nine tones for pronunciation, whereas Mandarin has four.

Another cultural phenomenon is that the Cantonese dialect itself develops with the times. Add to that the fact that people often blend Cantonese and English into conversations, and it’s clear to see why it was complicated to create test cases and validate language packs.

“Cantonese is a very unique dialect that varies in different Cantonese-speaking regions,” says Jing Li, who leads the operation for testing the Cantonese AI solution. “Some of the slang, phrases, vocabulary and even the tones are varied from place to place. Therefore, we conducted a large amount of work in verifying the Hong Kong-specific data, as well as proofreading tens of thousands of relevant test cases.”

With these complexities in mind, SRC-G and SRC-B worked together to support a deep code mix using a mixture of Cantonese and English for speech recognition, simultaneously supporting both written and spoken expressions in machine translation and reflecting current pronunciations in speech synthesis.

    Cultural Impact of Communication

When Galaxy AI launched the Chinese (Hong Kong) language option, the customer feedback showed that the hard work of the Samsung R&D team was justified.

For both the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong, Samsung’s Galaxy AI activities show the importance of a global brand having a local presence and expertise, as well as the power of open collaboration with other organizations. In Hong Kong, Cantonese is a key part of the cultural identity of those who live there. That’s why it was so important for the team to get the AI language model right.

“Language and communication are crucial in every region and in all walks of life,” says Henry Wat, Heads of Engineering Group at Samsung Electronics Hong Kong. “No matter the language, any tool that helps people communicate is invaluable. I believe our work is meaningful.”

In the next episode of The Learning Curve, we will head to Brazil to see how a team works across cultures and borders to bring Galaxy AI to more people.

  • Sony Electronics and The Associated Press Have Completed Testing of Advanced In-Camera Authentication Technology to Address Growing Concerns About Fake Imagery.

New In-Camera Signature Solution Attaches Digital Certificate to Photos at the Point of Capture to Certify Legitimacy

Sony Electronics today announced the conclusion of a second round of testing with Associated Press for Sony’s in-camera authenticity technology. This in-camera digital signature enables the construction of an image birth certificate, authenticating the content’s origin.

Sony’s authenticity technology provides a machine-based digital signature, removing the opportunity for undetected manipulation at the start. The digital signature is made inside the camera at the moment of capture in the hardware chipset. This security feature is aimed at professionals wanting to safeguard the authenticity of their content and provides an extra layer of security to aid news agencies in their fight against falsified imagery.

“While the rapid evolution of generative AI (Artificial Intelligence) brings new possibilities for creative expression, it has also led to growing concern about the impact of altered or manipulated imagery in journalism,” says Neal Manowitz, President and COO of Sony Electronics. “The dissemination of false information and images has real world social impact that brings harm not only to our photojournalist and news agency partners, but to society as a whole. We care deeply about this challenge and are committed to using our resources to help solve it. Through Sony’s work on the steering committee for C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), we have helped set the current industry standard for the tracking of editing and manipulation of imagery. Additionally, our in-camera authenticity technology has shown valuable results, and we will continue to push its development towards a wider release.”

“Fake and manipulated images are a major concern for news organizations. Not only do they contribute to mis- and disinformation but ultimately, they erode the public’s trust in factual, accurate imagery,” said David Ake, AP Director of Photography. “We are proud to be working alongside Sony Electronics to create an authentication solution that can help combat this problem.”

Sony and AP’s most recent field test was completed during October of 2023. In this month-long test, both capture authentication and workflow process were evaluated. To accomplish this, Sony partnered with Camera Bits – the company behind the industry standard workflow tool, Photo Mechanic. Alongside Sony and AP, Camera Bits created technology in Photo Mechanic that preserves the camera’s digital signature all the way through the metadata editing process.

“We appreciate the significant challenge that manipulated imagery poses for our partners, and we are highly motivated to play a role in helping solve it,” says Dennis Walker, President and Founder of Camera Bits. “Photo Mechanic has been used by the photojournalism industry for 25 years and continues to evolve as the industry introduces new technology. We are committed to ensuring Photo Mechanic remains a trusted and authentic workflow solution.”

Sony’s new in-camera signature and C2PA authentication is planned for release in a firmware update in the newly announced Alpha 9 III, Alpha 1, and Alpha 7S III in the Spring of 2024.

The combination of two latest XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors and control algorithms provides high-speed, high-precision, and low-vibration AF performance. When combined with the simultaneously announced Alpha 9 III, it enables high-speed continuous shooting with AF/AE tracking of up to 120 frames per second. This allows you to capture dynamic subjects without missing a moment’s opportunity, even when shooting scenes where the subject moves quickly, such as sports or animals, or scenes where the subject moves erratically, such as at events. In addition, high AF performance is demonstrated even when the separately sold teleconverter3 is attached.

Exceptional mobility and comfortable operability that support professionals in the field

Extensive weight reduction measures make FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS the lightest in its class1, at approximately 1470g (excluding tripod mount) and has been designed with consideration to weight balance. The internal lens barrel uses durable magnesium alloy to achieve both high robustness and light weight. The weight is not concentrated at the front of the lens barrel, making it highly stable and allows for agile and accurate panning while handheld shooting. In addition, MODE3, which provides enhanced viewfinder stability and optimises the image stabilisation algorithm, allows you to accurately capture dynamic scenes.

In addition, when using with the Alpha 9 III, you can assign “preset focus” to the function ring that allows you to instantly adjust the focus to any position. Furthermore, the camera features comfortable operability that supports professional shooting, including focus hold buttons placed in four locations that allow you to assign your favorite functions from the camera body.
