  • The Hidden Injury Behind Every Sprint: Understanding Hamstring Damage in Athletes

    As football fever intensifies during the 2026 FIFA World Cup season, athletes and recreational players alike are returning to training grounds and football pitches worldwide. While the excitement of the game remains unmatched, the demands of sprinting, sudden directional changes and powerful kicking actions place significant strain on the body, increasing the risk of injury.

    Although knee and ankle injuries often receive the most attention in football, hamstring injuries remain one of the most common yet underestimated problems affecting athletes. The recent hamstring injury suffered by Malaysian football star Arif Aiman serves as a reminder that even elite players are not immune to this condition.

    According to Dr Aminudin Mohamed Shamsudin, Consultant Orthopaedic, Trauma and Sports Surgeon at Sunway Medical Centre Velocity (SMCV), hamstring injuries account for approximately 35% of all muscle-related injuries among professional athletes and affect between 10% and 30% of sports participants.

    Located at the back of the thigh, the hamstring muscle group plays a critical role in running, accelerating, decelerating and maintaining stability. Often described as the body’s natural braking and propulsion system, these muscles are constantly exposed to high levels of stress during sporting activities. When overloaded, the muscle fibres may stretch beyond their limits, leading to strains, tears or, in severe cases, complete detachment from the bone.

    Hamstring injuries vary considerably in severity. Mild strains may heal within several weeks, while more extensive tears can require months of rehabilitation. In the most serious cases, the tendon may separate from the bone, necessitating surgical intervention.

    Young athletes face unique risks due to their developing skeletal structure. Dr Maria Shelynn Wong, Consultant Orthopaedic, Trauma and Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgeon at SMCV, explains that adolescents may sustain growth plate injuries instead of traditional muscle tears. These injuries, known as apophyseal avulsion fractures, occur when a powerful contraction causes a small piece of bone to separate from the pelvis.

    Warning signs include sudden pain, swelling, difficulty walking, reduced mobility and unusual sensations such as numbness or tingling. Early assessment through imaging such as X-rays, CT scans or MRI is often crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

    While many hamstring injuries can be treated through rest and physiotherapy, severe cases involving tendon or bone separation may require surgery to restore normal function. However, surgery is only one step in the recovery process. Comprehensive rehabilitation remains essential to rebuild strength, flexibility and movement control.

    Experts emphasise that returning to sport should never be based solely on the absence of pain. A structured rehabilitation programme and professional medical guidance are key to reducing the likelihood of reinjury and ensuring a safe return to competition.

    Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) akan menganjurkan Festival Ulang Tahun Bandar Raya Petaling Jaya Ke-20 yang berlangsung dari 16 hingga 21 Jun 2026 bagi memperingati dua dekad pengisytiharan Petaling Jaya sebagai bandar raya pada 20 Jun 2006. Sambutan selama enam hari itu bakal menampilkan pelbagai program yang memberi tumpuan kepada pembelajaran sepanjang hayat, transformasi digital, pembangunan komuniti, kelestarian alam sekitar serta penghayatan budaya, melibatkan penyertaan masyarakat daripada pelbagai latar belakang.

    Datuk Bandar Petaling Jaya, YBhg. Dato’ Hj. Mohamad Zahri bin Hj. Samingon berkata, sambutan tersebut bukan sekadar mengenang perjalanan pembangunan bandar raya itu, malah menjadi platform untuk memperkukuh semangat kebersamaan serta memperbaharui komitmen ke arah masa depan yang lebih mampan, pintar, berdaya tahan dan sejahtera. Menurut beliau, kejayaan Petaling Jaya sepanjang dua dekad lalu adalah hasil kerjasama erat antara pihak berkuasa tempatan, komuniti, sektor swasta dan pelbagai pihak berkepentingan yang sama-sama menyumbang kepada pembangunan bandar raya tersebut.

    Sepanjang tempoh 20 tahun lalu, Petaling Jaya berkembang sebagai antara bandar raya utama negara yang menjadi pusat ekonomi, pendidikan, kesihatan, inovasi dan perkhidmatan. Dengan keluasan 97.2 kilometer persegi serta populasi seramai 807,879 penduduk setakat Januari 2024, bandar raya ini terus memainkan peranan penting sebagai pemacu pembangunan di Selangor dan Lembah Klang.

    Seiring dengan pertumbuhan tersebut, MBPJ telah melaksanakan pelbagai inisiatif yang memfokuskan kepada kesejahteraan rakyat, pembangunan mampan, pendigitalan, pengurusan alam sekitar, mobiliti bandar dan pengukuhan daya tahan komuniti.     Kisah Kaki Lima Kuala Lumpur Dihidupkan Semula di Merdeka 118 Melalui Mural Komuniti

    PNB Merdeka Ventures Sdn. Berhad (PNBMV), anak syarikat milik penuh Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), terus mengangkat kisah dan warisan Kuala Lumpur menerusi inisiatif pimpinan komuniti yang dilaksanakan di sekitar presint Merdeka 118 dan Menara Merdeka 118.

    Sebagai sebahagian daripada inisiatif Warisan KL yang lebih luas bagi menghidupkan semula jiwa Kuala Lumpur melalui elemen warisan, kebudayaan dan penyertaan komuniti, PNBMV akan menghiasi dinding awam di Jalan Hang Jebat dengan mural berwarna-warni yang menggambarkan nostalgia kehidupan Kuala Lumpur suatu ketika dahulu.

    Bertajuk “Kisah Kaki Lima: Kehidupan di Pusat Bandar Kuala Lumpur”, mural komuniti ini akan dihasilkan oleh Dipapansembilan Studio, penerima Program Geran Komuniti Merdeka 118 Pusingan 3, dengan sokongan rakan komuniti Think City Sdn. Bhd. Inisiatif ini merupakan sebahagian daripada Projek Naik Taraf Jalan Hang Jebat di bawah Program Penambahbaikan Ruang Awam Merdeka 118, yang bertujuan mewujudkan persekitaran bandar yang lebih mesra pejalan kaki, lebih menarik kepada pengunjung serta lebih saling terhubung melalui karya seni awam, landskap, pencahayaan, petunjuk arah dan kemudahan pejalan kaki.

    Terletak bersebelahan susur keluar parkir kereta B1 yang menuju ke presint Merdeka 118, mural ini diilhamkan daripada pesona Kuala Lumpur lama serta budaya kaki lima yang sinonim dengan kehidupan bandar pada masa dahulu. Mural ini akan menampilkan siri gerbang berilustrasi yang menggambarkan pelbagai suasana kehidupan harian di Kuala Lumpur, daripada kedai kopi dan kerusi gunting rambut kepada papan tanda lama, tukang kraf, beca, taman permainan serta interaksi kejiranan. Dinding ini juga merupakan salah satu laluan masuk utama dari Jalan Petaling menuju ke presint Merdeka 118.

    Seramai 35 sukarelawan Merdeka 118 daripada PNB dan PNBMV telah berkumpul untuk memulakan lukisan asas mural dengan mengecat latar belakang sebagai persediaan kepada penyertaan komuniti yang lebih meluas. Inisiatif ini turut melibatkan sukarelawan pelajar daripada beberapa sekolah di sekitar kawasan Merdeka 118. Sebagai sebahagian daripada program penglibatan Festival KL yang berlangsung dari 16 hingga 31 Mei, orang ramai turut dijemput untuk hadir dan menyumbang dalam penghasilan mural ini bagi menghidupkan kisah Kuala Lumpur serta menggalakkan penyertaan komuniti. Mural ini dijangka siap pada pertengahan Julai 2026.

    Menurut penerima geran, pelukis Fadzlan Rizan Johani, idea dan usaha sama antara Dipapansembilan Studio, PNBMV, Think City, DBKL dan Warisan KL bukan sahaja tertumpu kepada penghasilan mural, tetapi juga merupakan satu perjalanan bersama dalam membina hubungan dan dialog bersama komuniti. Projek ini mencerminkan bagaimana karyawan boleh berperanan sebagai penghubung antara insan, kisah dan komuniti melalui seni, di samping menjadikan pemilik ruang sebagai penyumbang aktif dalam proses kreatif. Melalui ekspresi bersama ini, mural ini menyumbang kepada penciptaan “genius loci” iaitu semangat setempat yang menjadikan ruang awam sebagai persekitaran bermakna yang dibentuk oleh kenangan, identiti dan hubungan sesama insan.

    Dato’ Hamdan Abdul Majeed, Pengarah Urusan Think City, berkata kerjasama dengan PNBMV mencerminkan peranan penyertaan masyarakat, penceritaan dan pengaktifan ruang awam dalam usaha mengeratkan hubungan antara Merdeka 118 dan kawasan sekitarnya. Beliau menjelaskan bahawa jiwa dan semangat Kuala Lumpur sentiasa hidup dalam ruang hariannya seperti kaki lima, lorong lama, sudut dikenali ramai serta komuniti yang membentuk perwatakan ibu kota. Melalui kerjasama ini di bawah Program Geran Komuniti Merdeka 118, mereka telah menyaksikan bagaimana komuniti membawa kreativiti dan inovasi baharu ke dalam ruang tersebut, sekali gus menjadikannya platform untuk perkongsian memori, ekspresi dan penglibatan. Usaha ini membuktikan bahawa pemulihan bandar bukan sekadar kerja naik taraf fizikal, tetapi satu proses bersama untuk menghubungkan insan dengan tempat, mengukuhkan identiti tempatan dan membentuk bandar yang lebih hidup serta bermakna.

    Sempena Festival KL, kisah ibu kota diteruskan di Menara Merdeka 118 menerusi pameran fotografi “Under the Shadows of Merdeka” oleh penerima Program Geran Komuniti Merdeka 118 Pusingan 2, Azul Adnan, bersama rakan kongsinya Grace Ho. Pameran ini berlangsung di Lobi Selatan Menara Merdeka 118 dari 1 April hingga 30 Jun 2026, menampilkan lebih daripada 20 keping gambar hitam putih yang merakam kisah kawasan kejiranan sekitar presint Merdeka 118 termasuk Jalan Petaling, Bukit Bintang, Pudu dan Kampung Attap.

    Melalui lensa Azul dan Grace, pengunjung diajak melihat kisah bandar dari perspektif jalanan, merentasi lorong-lorong lama dengan latar langit yang sentiasa berubah serta kehidupan harian di sekitar kawasan tersebut. Cetakan gambar berbingkai terpilih serta buku turut ditawarkan untuk jualan di Kedai Buku Riwayat di Jalan Tun H.S. Lee, sekali gus memperluaskan projek ini di luar ruang pameran dan menyokong karya kreatif tempatan.

    Mengulas mengenai inisiatif itu, Dato’ Ir. Ts. Izwan Ibrahim, Ketua Pegawai Eksekutif PNBMV, berkata Merdeka 118 terletak di salah satu kawasan kejiranan yang kaya dengan sejarah dan kisah menarik di Kuala Lumpur. Beliau menegaskan bahawa kawasan ini perlu terus berkembang dengan cara yang menghargai insan, tempat dan kisah harian yang menghidupkan jiwa kota.

    Beliau menambah bahawa melalui mural komuniti di Jalan Hang Jebat dan pameran fotografi “Under the Shadows of Merdeka”, pihaknya menggunakan seni serta penyertaan komuniti untuk menghubungkan semula masyarakat dengan warisan Kuala Lumpur dengan cara yang lebih segar dan bermakna. Mereka berharap dapat memperluaskan lebih banyak inisiatif berteraskan komuniti di sekitar Merdeka 118 serta mewujudkan peluang kepada orang ramai untuk menghayati kisah, budaya dan semangat bandar ini.

    Sebagai sebahagian daripada pameran tersebut, sesi photowalk berpandu yang dikendalikan oleh Azul dan rakan-rakannya turut diadakan pada bulan Mei dan Jun 2026, memberi peluang kepada peserta untuk meneroka serta merakam gambar kawasan sekitar.     Sempena Festival KL, Apostrophe Marketing Communications Sdn. Bhd., penerima Geran Komuniti Merdeka 118 Pusingan 3, turut menganjurkan festival kejiranan bertema Echoes of Chinatown pada 23 dan 24 Mei 2026 di Kwai Chai Hong. Festival ini menampilkan pasar bertema, persembahan langsung serta aktiviti bercerita sambil berjalan kaki yang direka untuk mengetengahkan semangat, kekayaan dan kepelbagaian kawasan tersebut. Bertempat di ruang awam sekitar Chinatown Kuala Lumpur, acara ini mengajak pengunjung tempatan dan antarabangsa meneroka daya tarikan, warisan serta tenaga kreatif kawasan tersebut.

    Selain itu, sesi perkongsian pertama Muzium Tekstil Merdeka (MTM) di Else Kuala Lumpur turut berlangsung baru-baru ini. Sebagai sebahagian daripada acara tersebut, pasukan MTM telah mengadakan sesi khas bertajuk “The Making of Merdeka Textile Museum” yang berkongsi kisah di sebalik tabir mengenai idea, inspirasi dan proses penubuhan muzium tersebut.
