    Wireless earphones have become essential accessories for anyone active and on the go including music lovers, students and office workers. Even though people have listened to music through wired earphones for decades, the arrival of wireless ones rapidly changed people’s behaviour thanks to the freedom of movement, ease of connection and wealth of features packed into their compact frame.

     Samsung’s Galaxy Buds series distinguishes itself from other wireless earbuds available on the market through enhanced sound quality, comfortable fit and a smarter sound experience powered by Galaxy AI. Samsung Newsroom revisited the history of the Galaxy Buds series — a device that has become a must-have item with smartphones.

     [2019] Galaxy Buds

    Focusing on the Essentials: The Beginning of Galaxy Wireless Earbuds

    In February 2019, Samsung launched the wireless Galaxy Buds for consumers who value a more convenient and exciting lifestyle. Accented with a glossy texture and round design, the wearable was compact enough to conveniently fit into the user’s pocket. The earbuds could also be secured with wingtips once placed in the ear, so they don’t slip out during intensive exercise.

     However, the most impressive feature was sound quality — the essence of earbuds. Samsung focused on enriching audio so users could hear crystal-clear sound regardless of their environment. The Galaxy Buds featured technology from Harman’s premium acoustic brand AKG to deliver a rich auditory experience that resembled the original sound. Adaptive Dual Microphone technology was another key to the clear sound quality whereby two mics located on the inside and outside of each earbud adjusted to ambient noise. Users could expect smooth sound quality even when taking phone calls in noisy public places.

     The portable Galaxy Buds boasted a long-lasting battery life. On a single charge, these earbuds provided up to 6 hours of play time or up to 5 hours of talk time. In addition, users could enjoy up to 13 hours of music playback with a dedicated charging case. Through the Galaxy S10’s Wireless PowerShare feature, the Galaxy Buds could be charged using the smartphone as well.

    Clearer Sound, Longer Hours of Use

    Introduced in February 2020, the Galaxy Buds+ showcased enhanced sound quality. Featuring 2-way speakers with a tweeter for crisp, clear highs and a woofer for powerful bass, these earbuds created a balanced sound. The three mics — one inside and two outside — reduced external noise while capturing the user’s voice accurately to allow for clear communication in any environment.

     The Galaxy Buds+ provided up to 11 hours of play time on a single charge. Users could enjoy 11 additional hours with the charging case for a total of 22 hours. Through Android and iOS device compatibility, more people could enjoy the latest features of the Galaxy Buds+.

    Evolved Noise Canceling, Dressed in Sustainable Materials

    As a response to the expanding wireless earbuds market, Samsung introduced the Galaxy Buds Pro in January 2021. Offering premium performance, these wearables highlighted the intelligent Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) feature — reducing background noise significantly so users can dial the world up or down. When the Buds Pro recognized a user’s voice, the device would automatically switch to Ambient sound and adjust the music volume. By reducing unnecessary noise, users could tune into what they really wanted to hear.

     For unparalleled sound quality, Samsung innovated both the interior and exterior design. The new structure minimized the effect of wind for clearer sound, and the 2-way speaker delivered dynamic audio across the entire sound range. By incorporating recycled polycarbonate (PC) into some components of the earbuds, the Galaxy Buds Pro provided the same level of performance and durability as the original but in a new, sustainable design.

    Smaller, Lighter Earbuds in Sync With Life

    Samsung launched the smallest and lightest earbuds in the Galaxy Buds series with Galaxy Buds2 in August 2021. Each earbud only weighed 5 grams, making the wearable perfect for users with active lifestyles. Equipped with 2-way dynamic speakers, Active Noise Canceling (ANC) and a new machine learning-based solution that responded to different noise levels, the Galaxy Buds2 effectively blocked out background noise during phone calls to deliver a clear voice to the person on the other line.

    Since earbuds are used throughout the day, the Galaxy Buds2 offered ear tips in three sizes and an Earbud Fit Test to ensure users could comfortably wear the device for long periods. If the earbuds didn’t fit snugly, the test result would indicate a “poor fit” and give users instructions on how to adjust. The Auto Switch feature allowed users to freely and conveniently switch connection between their Galaxy devices including smartphones, watches or tablets without disconnecting their Galaxy Buds2 each time.

    Taking Immersive Sound to the Next Level: An Expansion of Seamless Connectivity

    Released in August 2022, the Galaxy Buds2 Pro offered the most immersive sound experience in the Galaxy Buds series. Complete with High-Dynamic Range and wireless 24-bit high fidelity (Hi-Fi) audio, the earbuds reimagined how users listen to music. The 360 Audio Recording feature allowed users to vividly capture surrounding sound on smartphone-recorded videos, delivering multi-dimensional audio that makes users feel as if they are actually inside the video.

     The Galaxy Buds2 Pro earbuds were designed to be 15% smaller with an ergonomic design, so users could watch media content more comfortably. 

     The Next-Generation Galaxy Buds Will Be…

    This February, Samsung released a software update for the Galaxy Buds series. Now, users can enjoy the Galaxy S24 series’ AI technology along with various other hands-free AI features on the Galaxy Buds series. In addition, the update strengthened the Samsung device ecosystem experience by connecting the Galaxy Buds series to more products including the Galaxy Book4 series, Samsung TVs and more.

     Though sound cannot be seen, it has the power to evoke emotions, trigger memories and stimulate people.     Galaxy Watch Series Evolution: Redefining the Future of Smartwatches

    Before smartwatches, there was only one reason for anyone to look at their watch. Now, telling time is just one of a myriad of smartwatch functions. People use smartwatches to check time, keep track of important health markers, communicate with friends, choose watch faces for the day and enjoy various content from their wrists.

    Samsung Newsroom traced the evolution of the Galaxy Watch series over the past decade — as the device transcended its traditional role and redefined what it meant to be a watch.

     Thinking Outside the Box: Opening a New Era of Smartwatch

    Unveiled in September 2013, the revolutionary Galaxy Gear brought the Galaxy experience closer to everyday life. The wearable featured a 41.4-millimeter display that allowed users to make and receive calls, schedule events, set alarms and check the weather with their voice. Photos and short videos could be captured in the moment without smartphones, thanks to the 1.9-megapixel camera attached to the strap and the ingenious Memographer feature. More than a wristwatch, the Galaxy Gear set the stage for a new era of smartwatches.

     Samsung launched the second-generation Samsung Gear2 in February 2014. Lighter and thinner than its predecessor, this device was equipped with a longer-lasting battery and packed with more features that could be used without a smartphone. Users could monitor their heart rate and track their exercise in real time with the heart rate sensor or turn the watch into a standalone music player with the embedded file storage. The Samsung Gear2 Neo was introduced at the same time, offering consumers an additional option with all the same features of the Samsung Gear2 except the camera.

     Released in 2014, the Samsung Gear S was Samsung’s first smartwatch to feature a large, curved Super AMOLED display that wrapped around the user’s wrist — supporting 3G and Wi-Fi without a smartphone connection. The Samsung Gear S2, its 2015 successor, was Samsung’s first smartwatch with a circular display and the rotating bezel that is now a hallmark of the Galaxy Watch Classic lineup.

    In 2016, Samsung launched the Samsung Gear S3 which turned heads with an elegant design inspired by traditional timepieces and more innovative functions that improved daily life. The Always On Display feature continuously showed the time on users’ wrists with the Super AMOLED display that supports 16 million colors. Featuring a built-in speaker and microphone, the device allowed users to take calls on speakerphone without a Bluetooth headset. Meanwhile, the GPS helped users record exercise history or check routes on maps without a smartphone.

    Samsung Gear Sport, the last model in the Samsung Gear series, offered a sporty design for those with an active lifestyle. Boasting 5 ATM water resistance, the watch could be worn while swimming. Improved water resistance functions included Water lock mode which prevents unintentional activation of the touchscreen in strong currents.

    Galaxy Watch: A New Partner for Balanced Lifestyles

    In August 2018, the Galaxy Watch series was born. This rebrand reflected the diverse and ever-expanding functions of a smartwatch in today’s world — as a health tracker, personal assistant, fashion accessory and much more. To enhance the user experience and highlight Samsung’s smartwatch identity, the wearable maintained the signature circular bezel from previous models but added an hourly alarm and ticking sound of the second hand for the first time. Available in three colors and 42- and 46-millimeter sizes, this versatile device offered stress management and sleep management features to enhance users’ health and wellness. Users could keep track of workouts from 39 different kinds of exercises as well, more than any other watch on the market at the time.

    Samsung launched a new lineup of smartwatches in February 2019 with the Galaxy Watch Active, specifically designed for users with active lifestyles. Boasting a 28.1-millimeter Super AMOLED display, this watch retained the signature circular shape but eliminated the bezel and used aluminum to decrease the weight by 25 grams. The 20-millimeter watchband made of flexible fluoroelastomer offered fashion-conscious users a variety of options to express their individuality. On the other hand, health-conscious users could track their exercise, sleep, stress levels and blood pressure in real time — they could even check how long they spent in rapid-eye movement (REM) sleep versus the other three sleep stages.

     In August 2019, the Galaxy Watch Active2 took personalized health and wellness management to the next level for people seeking healthier lifestyles. Apart from the rotating bezel and other user experience enhancements, the My Style feature provided more stylish, customized watch faces to users. The wearable was the perfect partner in helping users adopt healthier and more balanced lifestyles through the upgraded stress and sleep management functions as well as the exercise feature that could track more than 39 different types of workouts. Moreover, the upgraded Galaxy ecosystem improved connectivity and everyday convenience.

     A New Era: Integrated Healthcare Is Here

    After two years, Samsung brought health seekers the Galaxy Watch3 in August 2020. Maintaining the circular bezel made of stainless steel, users could choose from a larger 41- or 45-millimeter display with a lighter, thinner body. For the first time in Galaxy history, Samsung added an even lighter, stronger and more premium model made of titanium. The device provided an integrated healthcare experience from the wrist with health, fitness, sleep management and blood pressure monitoring. In addition, Samsung introduced electrocardiogram (ECG) readings and a blood oxygen feature to track oxygen saturation over time.

    The Galaxy Watch4 series redefined the smartwatch experience in August 2021 — with two models, the modern and minimalistic Galaxy Watch4 and the more traditional Galaxy Watch4 Classic featuring the signature rotating bezel. Launched for the first time, the BioActive Sensor measured various health indicators such as blood pressure, ECG and blood oxygen saturation levels more accurately than the previous watch. Users wanting more holistic health insights could measure their body composition by simply placing two fingers on the smartwatch to learn how to manage and achieve their health goals. The wearable was equipped with the new Wear OS, developed jointly with Google, so that users could access a larger variety of applications. Meanwhile, the new One UI Watch update significantly enhanced the user experience by seamlessly connecting the watch with Samsung smartphones, wireless earbuds and other devices.

    Above Wrist: A Partner To Better Know Yourself

    In August 2022, Samsung opened the next chapter of smartwatches with the Galaxy Watch5 series. Optimal for outdoor sports, the Galaxy Watch5 Pro was newly introduced in this lineup. The more advanced Samsung BioActive Sensor improved the accuracy of body composition, heart rate and ECG monitoring measurements. Notably, a newly equipped temperature sensor on the Galaxy Watch5 provided skin temperature-based predictions to help women conveniently track their menstrual cycles.

     Samsung once again stood by its health-seeking users with the Galaxy Watch6 series, unveiled in July 2023. This wearable offers holistic health features to provide more personalized, innovative health solutions to users who want to better manage their health. Complete with a slimmer bezel, the display is about 20% larger than its predecessors to help users see more information at a glance. Galaxy Watch6 is designed with the signature circular design, whereas the Galaxy Watch6 Classic features a rotating bezel reminiscent of analog watches. A new button replaced the spring-bar structure, allowing users to easily switch their watchbands with one click.

     With an even more sensitive BioActive sensor and a high-performance processor, health metrics became more specialized — ranging from sleep management and fitness coaching to heart health monitoring.

    An AI-Based Galaxy Health Experience and the Next-Generation Watch

    Samsung unveiled One UI 6 Watch in May 2024. With this, the company has successfully transformed the Galaxy Watch into a total digital healthcare assistant that measures indicators such as heart rate, sleep patterns and more. Health insights are more comprehensive and detailed than ever before, and users now receive personalized messages powered by AI to motivate them to reach their health goals. Moreover, the upcoming Galaxy Watch series to be released in the second half of this year will measure Advanced Glycation End Products (AGEs) with an updated BioActive Sensor that features light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in more colors and newly designed photodiodes.

    Samsung and French Visionaries Raymond and Simon Depardon Launch Art Campaign for Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games

    Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Partner, has recently revealed a captivating art campaign created by the renowned French photographer Raymond Depardon and his son, director and photographer Simon Depardon. The campaign, named “Olympic Games Instants Shared #withGalaxy,” is currently active throughout Paris, showcasing captivating imagery that provides a fresh outlook on the impact of sports. As the countdown to Paris 2024 continues, Samsung is actively contributing to the vibrant atmosphere of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the host city.

    Raymond Depardon, a renowned photographer and filmmaker, has skillfully captured timeless images that have become iconic. His portfolio includes captivating portraits of athletes during the Olympic competitions from 1964 to 1980. The new campaign, created through a partnership between Samsung and the City of Paris, celebrates the influential work of Raymond. It symbolizes a transition as Raymond’s timeless black-and-white photographs are displayed alongside his son Simon’s fresh imagery capturing the latest Olympic Games and Paralympic Games disciplines.

    The collection of pictures showcases the talented athletes from Team Samsung Galaxy. Sarah Bee, Aurelien Giraud, Mejdi Schalck, and Yvan Wouandji are captured in action in various sports disciplines. The captivating images are currently on display at nine famous locations in Paris, such as Rue du Louvre, Pont de la Concorde, and Rue des Pyramides. This exhibition will continue until early September 2024.

    “I was absolutely delighted to be a part of this project as it marks a significant milestone in my photography career. It’s an incredible opportunity to have my work showcased alongside my father’s,” expressed Simon Depardon. “The artwork showcases four remarkable French athletes engaged in their respective sports, while also capturing their individual human essence through simultaneous portraits,” Depardon explained. “The Galaxy S24 has truly remarkable performance capabilities, which have allowed us to explore countless artistic possibilities that seamlessly blend with the city.”

    Starting from June 24 until September 8, 2024, fans have the opportunity to join the campaign by sharing messages of encouragement for Team Samsung Galaxy through a QR code displayed on every image. The messages will be displayed at Samsung’s Olympic rendezvous at Samsung | Champs-Elysees 125 and Village Plaza, Samsung’s athlete lounge within the Olympic and Paralympic Village, throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

    Stephanie Choi, EVP & Head of Marketing of Mobile eXperience Business at Samsung Electronics, emphasized the goal of the Olympic and Paralympic Games to foster global unity and inclusivity. “With the help of Raymond and Simon Depardon, Samsung is using cutting-edge Galaxy technology to contribute to the ongoing legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, showcasing their commitment to promoting the highest ideals.”

This means that users will be able to enjoy smooth and convenient public transportation services throughout the Île-de-France region, thanks to easy access to the Navigo Travel Card.     Grace “Sunny” Choi found her love for movement early on as a gymnast before injuries forced her to stop competing. She soon found a passion for breaking — balancing her love of dance with a successful corporate career. And in anything she does, Sunny wants to be the best. When breaking was announced as an Olympic sport for Paris 2024, Sunny forged a new path, breaking every limit along the way. She left her job and moved to New York City, the birth of breaking, to chase her Olympic dream. Soon, she became the first-ever U.S. b-girl to qualify for the Olympic Games.

    Sunny’s openness to change helped make her dream a reality. As risky as it may have been, she followed her passion, opened herself to new possibilities and didn’t let anything stand in her way. Breaking is a sport built on self-expression, creativity and community. And it defies limits and expectations, just like Sunny.

    On the Road to Paris 2024, as she gets set to represent Team USA at the first-ever Olympic breaking competition in Paris, Sunny is staying open to every possibility, bringing joy to the sport and her journey, and working to inspire others to break limits for themselves.
