  • Base Maintenance Malaysia Celebrates First Batch of Locally Trained Aviation Technicians

Base Maintenance Malaysia Celebrates First Batch of Locally Trained Aviation Technicians

Base Maintenance Malaysia (“BMM”), a wholly owned subsidiary of SIA Engineering Company Limited (“SIAEC”), has marked a significant milestone with the graduation of its first cohort of 55 trainee technicians. This achievement reflects the company’s strong commitment to nurturing skilled local talent while reinforcing Malaysia’s position in the growing aerospace maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) sector.

The milestone comes at a crucial time, as the Asia-Pacific region is projected to dominate global aircraft fleet expansion and MRO demand in the coming years. With this surge, the need for qualified aviation technicians has intensified, placing pressure on Malaysia’s aerospace industry to accelerate the development of a highly skilled, homegrown workforce capable of meeting international standards.

To address this demand, BMM introduced its structured Technician Trainee Programme, designed to strengthen the national talent pipeline while supporting Malaysia’s Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) ecosystem. The programme equips trainees with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience, ensuring they graduate with industry-relevant skills. To date, more than 100 technicians have enrolled, demonstrating strong interest and confidence in the initiative.

The graduation ceremony, officiated by Ng Sze Han, Selangor State Executive Councillor for Investment, Trade and Mobility, highlights the collaborative efforts between industry and government in building a sustainable talent pipeline. This initiative aligns closely with Malaysia’s ambitions under the Aerospace Industry Blueprint 2030, which aims to position the country as a leading regional hub for MRO services.

Spanning 12 months, the programme integrates classroom-based learning with supervised practical training in controlled environments. Trainees are exposed to critical areas such as aircraft maintenance fundamentals, safety and regulatory compliance, maintenance procedures, human factors, aviation legislation, and aircraft systems and engine familiarisation. This comprehensive approach ensures graduates are well-prepared to transition into real-world maintenance operations.

BMM has also forged strategic partnerships with leading aviation training institutions, including Universiti Kuala Lumpur Malaysian Institute of Aviation Technology, ADMAL Aviation College and APR Aviation Training Centre. Through these collaborations, students gain valuable exposure to actual aircraft maintenance environments while pursuing pathways towards becoming licensed aircraft engineers and technicians.

According to BMM Chief Executive Officer Lee Yang Loong, the graduation of this inaugural cohort represents more than just a training milestone. It underscores the company’s long-term investment in developing Malaysian aerospace professionals capable of supporting the rapidly expanding global MRO landscape. As demand for maintenance capacity continues to rise, building a strong and sustainable local talent pipeline is not only a strategic priority but also a business necessity for the future of the industry.

  • Duolingo Teams Up with NIKI to Inspire Language Learning Among Indonesia’s Gen Z

Duolingo Teams Up with NIKI to Inspire Language Learning Among Indonesia’s Gen Z

Duolingo has teamed up with Indonesian global pop star NIKI to launch a creative, music-driven campaign aimed at inspiring English learning among Gen Z in Indonesia. Running from 26 to 31 March, the initiative transforms song lyrics into engaging learning moments, tapping into the way young audiences naturally absorb language through music, social media, and global pop culture. By aligning with everyday habits, the campaign highlights how language learning is evolving beyond traditional classrooms into more immersive, culturally relevant experiences.

This collaboration comes at a time when demand for language learning in Indonesia is rapidly increasing. Throughout 2025, Indonesia remained one of Duolingo’s fastest-growing markets, contributing to the platform’s milestone of over 133 million monthly active users and 52 million daily active users worldwide. With Gen Z making up nearly 28% of the population, according to national statistics, the appetite for accessible and engaging learning tools continues to grow—especially among a digitally native generation that often encounters English through songs, online interactions, and entertainment before formal education.

At the core of the campaign is the idea that language is best learned through context and repetition, a principle central to Duolingo’s learning approach. Music naturally reinforces this process, as catchy lyrics help listeners internalise vocabulary, rhythm, and emotional expression without conscious effort. By collaborating with NIKI—an artist known for writing and performing primarily in English—the campaign bridges education and entertainment, showing how language can be experienced through culture rather than memorised through rote methods.

With more than five billion streams on Spotify and performances on global stages such as Coachella, NIKI represents a new generation of Indonesian artists who have successfully crossed into the international music scene. Her journey resonates strongly with young Indonesians who view English proficiency as a pathway to global opportunities. Through this collaboration, she not only lends her influence but also helps contextualise language learning in a way that feels authentic and aspirational.

One of the campaign’s highlights is a playful parody of NIKI’s hit song “Backburner,” featuring Duolingo’s iconic owl mascot recreating scenes from the original music video. The lighthearted content humorously reflects the struggle of maintaining learning consistency, drawing parallels between being ignored in a relationship and skipping daily lessons. Complementing this is a social content series where NIKI breaks down the meaning behind her lyrics, explaining slang, emotional nuance, and everyday English expressions—offering fans a deeper connection to both the music and the language.

Extending beyond digital platforms, the campaign also comes to life through lyric-inspired installations at the Mandarin Oriental in Jakarta. These outdoor displays reinterpret lines from “Backburner” using Duolingo’s signature humour, turning familiar lyrics into playful reminders to stay consistent with language learning. By merging pop culture with public spaces, the campaign creates interactive and shareable moments that encourage continued engagement.

Ultimately, the collaboration reflects Duolingo’s broader mission to make education accessible, engaging, and seamlessly integrated into daily life. By combining music, storytelling, and humour, the campaign demonstrates that language learning does not have to begin with textbooks or formal lessons. For Indonesian Gen Z, it can start with something as simple—and as powerful—as a song.

  • Having Backups Isn’t Enough: Recovery Readiness Malaysian Businesses Need in 2026

By Guan Tian Lai, COO of Exabytes

Imagine a typical workday suddenly disrupted. A critical system goes down, employees are locked out, customer orders stall, and support lines start ringing non-stop. In the midst of the chaos, someone says, “It’s fine, we have backups.” It sounds reassuring—but in reality, that statement often hides a dangerous misconception.

Backups are not the same as recovery. A backup only confirms that a copy of data exists. Disaster recovery, on the other hand, determines whether a business can restore its systems, applications, and operations within an acceptable timeframe—and with minimal data loss. The gap between these two is where many organisations lose valuable hours, revenue, and customer trust.

This distinction is becoming increasingly critical as Malaysia’s digital economy grows more complex. Businesses today face a range of disruptions, from human error and system misconfigurations to credential breaches and cloud service outages. These are not rare, large-scale disasters—they are everyday risks that expose a deeper issue: most organisations are not truly prepared to recover.

Warnings from the Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team have also highlighted a rise in ransomware incidents in early 2026, reinforcing the urgency for stronger cybersecurity and recovery strategies. As threats evolve alongside cloud and AI adoption, relying on backups alone is no longer sufficient.

At the heart of recovery readiness are two key concepts: Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO). RTO defines how quickly a system must be restored before the impact becomes unacceptable, while RPO determines how much data loss a business can tolerate. These are not merely technical metrics—they are business decisions that directly affect operations, customer experience, and financial performance.

However, many organisations fail not because they lack backups, but because they have never tested recovery. A system may show “backup successful,” yet no one knows how long restoration will take—or whether it will work at all. Dependencies such as identity systems, network configurations, and application integrations are often overlooked, making full recovery far more complex than expected.

Another common challenge is the lack of clear ownership during incidents. When everything is urgent, teams can become paralysed, unsure of what to restore first. Without a defined recovery sequence or runbook, valuable time is lost in decision-making instead of action. Access issues can further complicate the situation, especially when the right personnel cannot retrieve or restore systems quickly.

Modern cyber threats add another layer of risk. In cases of credential compromise, attackers may not need to destroy backups—they can simply restrict access or delete them using the same privileged accounts. This is why secure, immutable backups and separated access controls are essential components of any recovery strategy.

It is also important to understand the difference between Backup-as-a-Service (BaaS) and Disaster Recovery-as-a-Service (DRaaS). While BaaS focuses on storing data copies, DRaaS ensures that entire systems and operations can be restored. Confusing the two can lead to prolonged downtime and costly disruptions.

To build true resilience, Malaysian businesses must shift from a backup mindset to a recovery-first approach. This begins with identifying critical systems that must be restored immediately, defining realistic RTO and RPO targets, and creating a clear recovery plan. Regular disaster recovery drills are equally important, as they reveal gaps that are often invisible during normal operations.

Ultimately, the goal is not just to have data—it is to restore business continuity quickly, confidently, and with minimal impact. Because in today’s environment, the real risk is not that something will break. It is that when it does, the organisation is not ready to recover.

As businesses reflect on initiatives like World Backup Day, the message for 2026 is clear: backing up data is only the first step. True resilience lies in the ability to recover.
