Susan Meiselas to Be Honored at 2025 Sony Photography Awards

The Sony World Photography Awards 2025 has announced Susan Meiselas as the recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Contribution to Photography award. This honor recognizes her profound impact on the medium over the past five decades, celebrated for her deeply engaged approach to documentary photography.

Meiselas has expanded the boundaries of the genre with her sensitive portrayals of individuals within their communities, focusing particularly on the lives and struggles of women. From girls growing up in New York’s Little Italy to survivors of domestic violence in the UK, Meiselas’ work highlights often unseen lives through powerful storytelling.

Meiselas’ body of work spans numerous significant projects. Notable among these are Carnival Strippers (1972-75), which captured the experiences of women performing at New England carnivals, Prince Street Girls (1975-1990), documenting a group of young girls in Little Italy as they grew into adulthood, and A Room of Their Own (2015-2017), which portrays the lives of women in a refuge in the Black Country, UK, offering an intimate look at their stories through photographs, testimonies, and original artwork. Other seminal works include Pandora’s Box (1995), which focuses on a New York City S&M club, and 44 Irving Street (1971), where Meiselas invited her boarding house neighbors to write about their perceptions of themselves in relation to the portraits she created of them.

In recognition of her immense contribution to photography, an exhibition of Meiselas’ work will be held at London’s Somerset House from 17 April to 5 May 2025. This retrospective will feature five of her projects, including Prince Street Girls and Carnival Strippers, with some pieces never before exhibited in the UK. These projects are united by recurring thematic elements, shedding light on the intimate and often hidden dynamics of everyday lives, as Meiselas’ long-term, participatory approach provides an unparalleled look at the people and places she documents.

Reflecting on receiving the award, Meiselas expressed her gratitude, “I am honoured to receive this Award for my contribution to the ever-expanding world of photography. Over the past 50 years, I have had the privilege of witnessing history being made, sharing the often unseen lives of those engaged in its making. The work on display invites reflection not only on the photographs themselves but also on the relationships that shaped and inspired them.”

Meiselas, born in Baltimore in 1948, is renowned not only for her photographic essays but also for her work documenting the revolution in Nicaragua in the late 1970s, which remains deeply etched in the public’s imagination. She joined Magnum Photos in 1976 and has since produced a body of work that has reshaped how we think about documentary photography.

As the 18th recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography award, Meiselas joins a distinguished list of previous honorees, including Mary Ellen Mark (2014), Martin Parr (2017), Graciela Iturbide (2021), Edward Burtynsky (2022), and Sebastião Salgado (2024). Meiselas will be presented with the award at the annual gala ceremony in London on 16 April 2025, during the celebration of the overall winners of the Sony World Photography Awards 2025.

  • Osmo Action 5 Pro: DJI Redefines Action Cameras with Unmatched Image Quality and HDR Innovation

Osmo Action 5 Pro: DJI Redefines Action Cameras with Unmatched Image Quality and HDR Innovation

DJI has officially rolled out the Osmo Action 5 Pro, solidifying its reputation as a leader in civilian drone technology and innovative cameras.

This latest iteration in the acclaimed Osmo action camera series introduces several cutting-edge features that can compete with those of professional-grade cameras. With a dynamic range of 13.5 stops and a battery life that lasts up to 4 hours, the Osmo Action 5 Pro sets a high standard for action photography, empowering users to document their journeys, from waves to peaks, under any conditions.

Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI, remarked, “Our goal is to fuse the high image quality of professional cameras with the rugged design typical of action cameras.” He emphasized that today’s creators are becoming increasingly sophisticated in how they share their narratives and capture moments. “Rather than just implementing minor upgrades, we aim to revolutionize the entire action camera landscape and evolve in tandem with these innovators.”

    DJI

This camera is equipped with an advanced 1/1.3” sensor, which boasts a pixel size of 2.4 μm and a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops, making it the first action camera to match the specifications of professional models. It captures images in 10-bit D-Log M and supports hybrid log-gamma (HLG) for exceptional display quality. Additionally, the device can record high-dynamic, low-light video at 4K/60fps, ensuring fine shadow details without sacrificing highlight integrity, thus elevating overall image quality. The SuperNight mode employs AI-driven noise reduction to brighten challenging low-light scenes, yielding clearer footage.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro offers an impressive battery life of up to 4 hours on a single charge, which is a 50% increase compared to its predecessor, allowing for longer shooting intervals. This enhancement is attributed to a low-power 4nm chip, a larger 1950mAh battery, and a specialized DJI algorithm that enhances energy efficiency. Even in extreme cold, as low as -20° C (-4°F), this camera can reliably capture footage for up to 3.6 hours. In comparison, most action cameras typically provide around 2 hours of battery life. Moreover, the fast-charging DJI 30W USB-C Charger allows users to achieve 2 hours of recording after only a 15-minute charge.

Notably, the Osmo Action 5 Pro introduces integrated subject centering and tracking, enabling creators to film without relying on a gimbal. With its powerful 4nm chip and advanced machine learning algorithms, the camera can accurately detect the subject’s location and dynamically adjust the composition in real time, ensuring that the subject remains well-framed in every shot.

Engineered for underwater photography, this camera boasts an industry-leading waterproof capability of 20 meters without the need for an external casing. A built-in color temperature sensor guarantees accurate color rendering underwater. Users can program the camera to automatically start recording when submerged and stop once it surfaces. It also includes a pressure gauge to monitor underwater depth, duration, and altitude, significantly enhancing user safety. Adhering to EN13319 standards, it meets internationally recognized criteria for diving equipment.

The Osmo Action 5 Pro features larger dual OLED touchscreens on both the front and back, equipped with high-brightness displays. With a peak brightness of 1000 cd/㎡, capturing images in bright sunlight is much more manageable. The enlarged screens, combined with narrower bezels, have improved the screen-to-body ratio by 16% compared to the previous model, while maintaining the camera’s compact form factor.

Furthermore, this camera integrates seamlessly with the DJI OsmoAudio™ ecosystem, allowing for direct Bluetooth connectivity to the DJI Mic 2 Transmitter for ultra-high sampling rate audio recording. This capability ensures studio-quality sound without the necessity of an external receiver. When the Built-in Mic Audio Backup feature is activated, it captures ambient sounds as well, enriching the recordings with authenticity.

By connecting the Osmo Action 5 Pro to the DJI Mimo app via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, creators can effortlessly preview the camera view, modify settings, and edit their footage. The Mimo app offers exciting new features, such as live photo capture, high-resolution 4K frame grabs, and the ability to export videos in 4K/120fps with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Users can also download photos and videos from their DJI camera in the background, allowing them to continue using their smartphones for other tasks.
