Majlis Malaysia Most Outstanding Wealth Advisors (MMOWA) 2023 anjuran Majlis Tindakan Pengguna Negara adalah suatu pengiktirafan kepada penasihat kewangan yang banyak membantu masyarakat memperoleh pemahaman khususnya berkaitan literasi kewangan.

Pada 27 Julai 2023, di Suhakam, Memorandum Organisasi Nambikkai telah diserahkan, serta permohonan ikat jamin bagi mangsa tahanan di bawah Akta Sokma 2012.

35 orang mangsa tahanan SOSMA (GST 08), ahli keluarga 24 orang mangsa tahanan SOSMA (Geng SAKAI), SOSMA (Rusa Boy) bersama-sama Suara Rakyat Malaysia (SUARAM) serta Sebaran Kasih, telah menyeru agar pihak Datuk Seri menggunakan mandat dan amanah daripada rakyat untuk memberikan keadilan kepada semua mangsa tahanan SOSMA yang sedang menunggu tarikh perbicaraan yang dijadualkan pada Julai 2024 hingga September 2024 (bagi tahanan SOSMA GST 08) dan yang sedang menjalani perbicaraan (Geng SAKAI).

Di bawah peruntukan seksyen 13 (Sosma), tiada sesiapa yang dipertuduh atas kesalahan keselamatan dibenarkan ikat jamin kecuali mereka adalah dibawah umur 18 tahun, wanita dan seorang yang sakit atau seorang yang uzur. Berpendapat bahawa seksyen ini adalah bercanggah kepada prinsip kedaulatan undang-undang (‘rule of the law’) atau prinsip keadilan semula jadi (‘natural justice’) kerana ia memberi kuasa kepada pihak penguatkuasa untuk memenjarakan seseorang walaupun beliau belum didapati bersalah di mahkamah.

Akibat proses perbicaraan yang panjang, peruntukan ini turut disalahguna oleh pihak polis untuk berunding dengan OKT. OKT ‘dinasihatkan’ untuk mengakui salah supaya mendapat hukuman rendah malah tidak perlu meringkuk penjara sehingga bicara selesai. Terdapat kes-kes dahulu dilaporkan bahawa OKT berbuat demikian untuk mengelakkan sebarang pelanjutan tempoh pertahanan. Hal ini menunjukkan bahawa peruntukan ini telah menafikan hak-hak OKT untuk mendapat satu perbicaraan yang adil dan saksama.

Selain itu, walaupun terdapat beberapa tahanan dalam kes ini telah memenuhi syarat untuk mendapatkan jaminan iaitu mereka yang sakit, namun permohonan ikat jamin masih ditolakkan. Perbicaraan bagi kes ini hanya akan berlangsung pada Julai hingga September 2024. Hal ini juga menyebabkan ramai keluarga yang hilang sumber pendapatan kerana kebanyakan OKT merupakan pencari nafkah yang tunggal dalam keluarga. Keluarga dibelenggu dengan kemiskinan, malah taraf kehidupan ahli keluarga termasuk kanak-kanak dan ibu bapa yang uzur turut terjejas.

Pemberian ikat jamin sangat penting kerana

1. Rata-rata ahli keluarga mengalami masalah kewangan kerana hilang punca pendapatan. Ada diantara mereka menjaga ibu bapa yang uzur dan bertanggungjawab sebagai pencari nafkah utama buat keluarga mereka.
2. Akaun bank tahanan SOSMA ini dibekukan tanpa mempunyai sebarang bukti kesalahannya. Notis pembekuan diberikan kepada keluarga hanya sebulan selepas pembekuan. Ini menyebabkan perniagaan mereka terjejas kerana tiada modal untuk menjalankan perniagaan oleh ahli keluarga mereka.
3. Anak-anak mangsa tahanan SOSMA menghadapi masalah emosi dan sosial kerana bapa mereka tidak dapat bersama mereka untuk membimbing ke arah kesejahteraan keluarga. Mereka yang bersekolah sering diejek dan dicaci serta dipinggirkan.
4. Hubungan suami isteri menjadi renggang dan berakhir dengan penceraian. Masa depan kedua-dua suami isteri musnah akibat perpisahan disebabkan tahanan dalam tempoh masa yang lama.
5. Orang awam sering mengutuk dan memandang rendah terhadap keluarga tahanan malah dilihat sebagai ancaman. Ahli keluarga terpaksa menanggung perasaan malu kerana tahanan dianggap sebagai pengganas negara.

Kesimpulannya,ahli keluarga mangsa tahanan SOSMA berharap pihak Datuk Seri mengambil kira kesemua isu. Mereka juga memohon pertimbangan dan jasa baik pihak Datuk Seri untuk membebaskan tahanan mangsa SOSMA dengan kadar segera.

Mereka berharap agar OKT boleh mendapatkan jaminan tanpa sebarang bantahan daripada Jabatan Peguam Negara. Kami menuntut agar Kerajaan Malaysia meminda seksyen 13 SOSMA dan memberi satu moratorium supaya peruntukan ini tidak digunakan sehingga pindaan peruntukan ini selesai. Kami turut berharap agar OKT boleh mendapatkan jaminan tanpa sebarang bantahan daripada Jabatan Peguam Negara.

In its aspiration to become a sustainable retailer, Lotuss Stores (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Lotus’s Malaysia) is continuing its efforts to source for alternatives to reduce single-use plastics in its operations, whilst finding ways to engage and create interest amongst Malaysian youth to be more involved in circularity. This is the start of the public private partnership between the retailer and a leading technical university, Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT), Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) that led to the creation of its first National Sustainability Innovation Challenge 2023 (NaSIC’23).

The objective of NaSIC’23 is to encourage creative, innovative, thinkers and problem solvers who are interested in environmental issues by providing them with exposure to green technology, engineering, science solutions and real industry cases relating to reducing, reusing, recycling and replacing single-use plastics in retail.

Corporate Services Executive Director of Lotus’s Malaysia, Azliza Azmel said, “This is our first collaboration with MJIIT-UTM to gather brilliant school going Malaysians to explore and express their innovative ideas; to address real challenges in the retail industry, with potential to become workable solutions fit not only for Lotus’s but for other retailers in Malaysia. We hope that with NaSIC’23, this will in many ways help to integrate sustainability into all aspects of education in Malaysia and empower Malaysian youth to create a sustainable future”.

Launched in April 2023, NaSIC’23 had successfully garnered participation from 390 students aged 14 to 18, representing 77 schools from West and East Malaysia. At the finals in Lotus’s Selayang today, 21 students from seven teams had showcased their brilliant ideas to a panel of judges from both Lotus’s and MJIIT-UTM. Judges present were Sushmita Paul, Chief Operating Officer of Lotus’s Malaysia, Azliza Azmel, Corporate Services Executive Director of Lotus’s Malaysia, Professor Dr. Masafumi Goto, Deputy Dean of Liaison and Internationalisation, MJIIT-UTM Kuala Lumpur and Associate Professor Dr. Roshafima Rasit Ali, Postgraduate Academic manager of MJIIT-UTM Kuala Lumpur.

The best idea will be further developed by MJIIT-UTM to benefit Lotus’s and potentially the retail industry in Malaysia. At the award ceremony, the top three teams were awarded with cash vouchers worth RM1200, RM900 and RM600 respectively. The winning teams for NaSIC’23 are:

“Sustainable development is a collaborative effort. We can see how Malaysia is working towards phasing out single-use plastic bags. Most retailers have started to stop providing single-use plastic bags to shoppers and Lotus’s Malaysia is one of them. Many companies work hard to phase out the use of single-use plastic by introducing stainless steel bottles and straws or reusable bags. UTM as the leading technical university in Malaysia, we are committed toward the innovation in producing new types of bioplastics, biodegradable plastics and sustainable materials for replacing the conventional plastics, as well as new technologies for processing used plastics to reduce its environmental impacts, said Professor Technologist Dr. Abdul Latif Bin Saleh, Pro-Vice Chancellor, UTM Kuala Lumpur Campus.

At the event, Azliza also shared that its ESG commitment is guided by its Three Benefit Principle, where its sustainability efforts should not only benefit the company but also the society and the country in which it operates in. In July 2021, the retailer took the initiative to stop the provisions of single-use plastic bags from its checkout counters which successfully prevented around 26 million single-use plastic bags from going into landfills and oceans.

Further to this, Lotus’s had also introduced its food waste composting trial efforts from one of its stores in 2022. This has resulted in 16% of its food waste successfully diverted from landfills. Other initiatives in circularity also include the use of sustainable materials in the packaging of its Lotus’s Own Brand products. To date 68% of its own brand packaging is fully recyclable.

Both Lotus’s and MJIIT-UTM has plans to continue its partnership for NaSIC’24, to address other areas of sustainability that will benefit the environment, consumers and students.

Infinix continues to empower Malaysian youths through their partnership with Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) for the Moonton Student Leader (MSL) Championship 2023, which is reaching its Grand Finale on July 29th, 2023.
