  • Leader Energy Forges Partnership with BMW Group Malaysia in New MOU

    Leader Energy Holding Berhad through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Leader EV Solutions Sdn Bhd , has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU with BMW Malaysia Sdn Bhd. The essence of the MOU is to feature the BMW brand across Leader EV’s Galaxy Charge network along the North-South Highway in Malaysia, and collaboratively launch campaigns to encourage vehicle charging for BMW-affiliated brands at Leader EV’s Galaxy Charge network. Leader Energy, along with its subsidiaries and jointly controlled entities, is an independent power producer primarily engaged in the development, ownership, operations, and maintenance of power assets and projects.

    Under the MOU, Leader EV will be responsible for the development, installation, operation and maintenance of the Galaxy Charge network. In addition, Leader EV is to actively promote and create awareness on electric vehicle charging technology while BMW is to fulfil the access of public charging solutions via a subscription or members programme through Leader EV’s Galaxy Charge network.

    Leader Energy’s Executive Deputy Chairman, Dato’ Sean H’ng said, “We are excited to embark on this journey with BMW Group Malaysia to further enhance the use and charging of electric vehicles through Leader EV’s Galaxy Charge network in Malaysia.   • Leader Energy and Solarvest Team Up to Explore Regional Opportunities

    Leader Energy Holding Berhad (“Leader Energy”) and Solarvest Holdings Berhad (“Solarvest”) have officially solidified their commitment to exploring sustainability opportunities within the Southeast Asia (“SEA”) region through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (“MOU”). This strategic collaboration paves the way for the joint exploration of projects and initiatives that align with both companies’ sustainability goals, leveraging their collective expertise and resources to contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally conscious future.   • What Is a Reserve Currency? U S. Dollar’s Role and History

    Most international debt is held in USD to maintain stability in lending costs and expected returns. Being the country issuing a reserve currency reduces transaction costs, since both sides of the transaction involve the same currency and one is yours. Reserve currency issuing countries are not exposed to the same level of exchange rate risk, especially when it comes to commodities, which are often quoted and settled in dollars.

    1. These reserve requirements are established by the Fed’s Board of Governors.
    2. As the United States printed more money to finance its spending, the gold backing behind the dollars diminished.
    3. We wish them luck in deciding between rate cuts and hikes if oil prices fall, hurting Russia while causing potential booms in India and China.

    How Do Currencies Gain Reserve Status?

    Most countries paid in gold, making the U.S. the owner of a majority of gold by the end of the war. Reserve currency status isn’t without its drawbacks, and the problems issuing countries face underscore why mature economies tend to be the ones issuing widely held currencies. Low borrowing costs stemming from issuing a reserve currency may prompt loose spending by both the public and private sectors, which may result in asset bubbles and ballooning government debt. Stimulus spending in the U.S., for example, led Chinese leaders to fear a weak dollar since that would erode the country’s value of dollar-denominated debt.

  • CBP SERTAI ICCMY2023 DI SEMPORNA, SABAH

    Bagi menyebarkan kesedaran tentang kesan pencemaran terhadap ekologi marin, Co opbank Pertama (CBP), penduduk tempatan dan kakitangan CBP mengambil bahagian dalam Pembersihan Pantai Antarabangsa 2023 (ICCMY2023) hari ini di Pulau Selakan, Semporna.

    ICCMY2023 ini dianjurkan oleh Reef Check Malaysia dan mendapat kerjasama daripada Ecodistrict Association dan Luma’ Selakan Eco Resort bersama penyelaras program, Stylo Events Sdn Bhd.

    ”Tujuan program ini diadakan adalah untuk menerapkan agenda Unitied Nation dalam Pembangunan Mampan SDG17, iaitu komitmen negara melalui penglibatan sektor korporat dalam program ESG (Alam Sekitar, Sosial dan Tadbir urus) bagi memastikan sasaran pengurangan impak pemanasan global yang berada diparas kritikal dan memberi kesan yang sangat signifikan kepada bumi seperti pencemaran, bencana alam dan kemusnahan alam sekitar.

    ”Melalui program seperti ini dapat memupuk kesedaran untuk komuniti prihatin mengenai kepentingan ekosistem alam sekitar dan sosio ekonomi yang menjadi sumber pendapatan masyarakat setempat,”katanya, menerusi satu kenyataan, hari ini.

    Di samping itu, objektif festival ini juga adalah untuk menyebarluas pendekatan dengan lebih mendalam mengenai Al-Quran serta meningkatkan kesedaran dan keyakinan bahawa Al-Quran itu adalah Kalam Allah yang diturunkan kepada Nabi Muhammad S.A.W untuk kita lebih memahami maksud & terjemahannya supaya dapat diamalkan dalam kehidupan seharian.

    Penganjuran festival ini juga diharapkan, dilihat sebagai usaha memartabatkan al-Quran. “(Al-Quran ini) sebuah Kitab yang Kami turunkan kepadamu (dan umatmu wahai Muhammad), Kitab yang banyak faedah-faedah dan manfaatnya, untuk mereka memahami dengan teliti kandungan ayatnya dan untuk orang yang berakal sempurna beringat Mengambil iktibar.” (Surah Sad, ayat 29)

    Harapan, agar segala perkongsian yang dicurahkan oleh para asatizah dalam festival ini dapat dimanfaatkan semaksima mungkin dalam amalan kehidupan seharian kita. Semoga kita akan terus istiqomah dalam usaha memartabatkan Al-Quran kepada kesejahteraan ummah.

  • MALAYSIA’S COMMITMENT ON CLIMATE ACTION AND PREPARATIONS FOR THE UNITED NATIONS FRAMEWORK CONVENTION ON CLIMATE CHANGE (UNFCCC) COP28

    The upcoming COP28, which will be held in Expo City Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30 November to 12 December 2023, is expected to attract a large Malaysian delegation of more than 200 delegates, including ministers, government officers, subject matter experts, representatives from the private sector, and representatives from other relevant organisations.

    Malaysia will also have a presence through a dedicated Malaysia Pavilion, which will showcase Malaysia’s thought leadership and proposition to the approximately 40,000 delegates expected to attend this global conference.

    The soft launch of the Malaysia Pavilion @ COP28 was officiated by YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, Minister of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change at IGEM 2023 today.

    As a party to the Paris Agreement, Malaysia has committed to reduce its economy-wide carbon intensity (relative to Gross Domestic Product) of 45% by 2030 compared to the 2005 level. Malaysia also aspires to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as early as 2050, subject to the outcome of the Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategies (LT-LEDS) prepared by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change.

    Malaysia will establish its own pavilion within the Blue Zone of COP28, intending to spotlight its proactive role as a climate leader and foster collaborations and investments. Throughout COP28, our pavilion will host interactive exhibits, panel discussions, and side events designed to offer diverse insights into Malaysia’s climate initiatives.

    Speaking at the Malaysia Pavilion COP28 soft launch, YB Nik Nazmi said, “Malaysia’s participation in COP28 in Dubai, UAE, is a collective journey driven by determination. As we traverse this path, let us focus our energy on crafting impactful policies, pioneering technologies, and fostering transformative collaborations.”

    “Malaysia is proud to showcase our unwavering commitment to climate action through the Malaysia Pavilion. It serves as more than just a physical structure; it stands as a tangible demonstration of Malaysia’s commitment and dedication to address climate change,” said Nik Nazmi.

    Malaysia’s Pavilion at COP28 will be led by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change and Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation as the implementing agency. The Ministry also organised a Climate Change Forum : Road to COP28 on 5 September 2023 aimed at fostering further discussion and gathering diverse perspectives on Malaysia’s agenda for COP. In November 2023, Malaysia will be hosting the Asia Pacific Climate Week, showcasing our commitment to address climate challenges on a regional scale.

     

  • ATOZERO ASEAN 2023, THE GATEWAY TO MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR NET ZERTRANSITION PROJECTS IN ASIA, KICKS OFF AT IGEM

    The AtoZero (Accelerate To Net Zero) ASEAN Summit, co-organised by Constellar and the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), kicked off this morning with 700 leaders from the net zero value chain participating in the 3-day event. Co-located and held concurrently with the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM) 2023, the Summit is part of a global series of events dedicated to net zero transition through driving leadership dialogues, investments and innovations around Asia’s net zero pathways.

    Powered by clean energy solutions provider, Gentari, AtoZero ASEAN emerges as the gateway to multi-billion dollar net zero transition projects in Asia. Southeast Asia’s power sector alone would require US$184 billion investment between 2021-2025 in the baseline scenario.

    The Summit also unveiled the Zero Club, a unique and exclusive feature across the AtoZero Global series in ASEAN, India and China, welcoming policymakers, CEOs and think-tank leaders to connect, collaborate and co-create positive impact across the net zero value chain. Zero Club at AtoZero ASEAN serves as a networking platform to connect the most important stakeholders of net zero transition to spark influential dialogues in accelerating net zero transition across Asia.

    Delivering the keynote address, the Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said, “For ASEAN to be a determining factor in the just energy transition, we need to discuss and reach consensus on pressing and pertinent topics such as regional inter-connectivity partnerships, energy storage, carbon capture, green financing, hydrogen economy and ASEAN future grid among others.”

    “AtoZero ASEAN’s inclusion into IGEM is significant in enabling us to race to net zero and demonstrate leadership in climate action by significantly influencing policy makers and game changers in the net zero arena. The event’s focus on accelerating ASEAN’s net zero transition highlights the importance of regional partnership to support this transition, fostering the kind of conversations we need to have to take our actions in ASEAN to the next tangible level for real impact,” he added.

    AtoZero ASEAN’s overarching aim is to bring together key decision makers and changemakers to comprehensively explore pathways, policies and business opportunities to drive the global net zero transition agenda. The three-day programme will see over 100 subject matter experts from around the world sharing insights on net zero dialogues and partnerships.

    Some of the eminent speakers and participants at the Summit included the top-brass from PETRONAS, International Gas Union, Tenaga Nasional Berhad, Gentari, India Renewable Energy Development Agency, Rystad Energy, Solarvest, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation, Bursa Malaysia, Pertamina, Chevron, ASEAN Centre for Energy, Aboitiz Power and UN Global Impact, amongst others.

  • Malakoff Aims to Generate 500 MW of Solar Power from the Group

    Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (“MoU”) with ports under the MMC Group of Companies (“MMC Ports”), namely Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, Johor Port Berhad, Tanjung Pelepas Sdn Bhd and Penang Port Sdn Bhd to explore the collective potential through collaboration and to undertake business exploration in various green power initiatives including, but not limited to, any solar power programme under the Government’s initiatives such as the Corporate Green Power Programme (“CGPP”), Self-Consumption (“SelCo”), cold ironing or shore-to-ship power supply, installation of Electric Vehicle (“EV”) charging stations and others, where collectively referred to as the “Green Power Projects”.

    An exchange of documents containing the MoU was held during the International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition and Conference Malaysia (“IGEM”) 2023 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center between Malakoff’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (“MD/CEO”) Encik Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib and the MMC Ports’ CEOs. The exchange was witnessed by Deputy Minister of Natural Resources Environment and Climate Change (“NRECC”) YB Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii and Malakoff’s Executive Vice Chairman Tan Sri Che Khalib Mohamad Noh.

    Through this MoU, Malakoff and MMC Ports are set to embark on a transformative partnershipwithin the CGPP where Malakoff will assume the pivotal role of a solar power producer and MMC Ports will serve as the esteemed corporate consumer. This strategic collaboration paves the way for MMC Ports to tap into Renewable Energy (“RE”) through a virtual acquisition of solar power. This initiative reflects the joint commitment of Malakoff and MMC Ports to spearhead the development of 500 MW of solar projects within the Albukhary Group of Companies.

    Additionally, under the SelCo rooftop solar programme, Malakoff will serve as the developer for the end-user, MMC Ports, where installation, operation and maintenance of the solar photovoltaic (“PV”) system to be expertly managed by Malakoff.

    Furthermore, in line with the Government’s aim to achieve a 70% RE capacity mix by 2050 Malakoff and MMC Ports are actively exploring opportunities for collaboration within the Large Scale Solar (“LSS”) programme. Additionally, they are considering the implementation of cold ironing or shore-to-ship power supply solutions. Cold ironing or shore-to-ship power supply is the process of providing electricity to the ship at berth, during which, the engines are shut down, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution.

    Malakoff’s MD/CEO Encik Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib welcomes the Government’s recent announcement of the National Energy Transition Roadmap (“NETR”) that not only outlines clear policies for utility companies such as Malakoff to further leverage its expertise onto the RE space, but it will substantially boost the country’s economic growth.

To date, our achievements encompass 67 MW of total solar installed capacity through LSS and rooftop solar, and a promising 84 MW of hydropower capacity that is steadily progressing towards completion. Ourreadily available landbank in Perak and Melaka that are located close to the grid lines, serves as evidence of our capacity, which would subsequently enable potential offtakers, especially within the Albukhary Group, to develop solar projects. Moreover, we are also exploring energy exports to the neighbouring countries, such as Singapore”.

  • Malaysia Takes a Leap in Climate Education with Innovative Simulator

    The Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change (NRECC), in partnership with the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), has officially unveiled the Malaysia Climate Action Simulator (MCAS). YB Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, the Minister of NRECC, presided over the formal launch event at the esteemed International Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition & Conference Malaysia (IGEM 2023), held from 4-6 October at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

    Funded by the UK Government’s International 2050 Calculator Programme and supported by esteemed technical partners, Mott MacDonald, Imperial College London, Ricardo, and CLIMACT, MCAS is a groundbreaking tool designed to empower users to simulate technically feasible low-carbon future scenarios up to the year 2050. It offers a dynamic visualisation of Malaysia’s carbon emission trajectory and facilitates a comprehensive exploration of diverse pathways to mitigate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions across critical sectors, including energy, transport, building, industry, land use, and waste.

    MCAS is a versatile communication tool to increase public awareness about the critical role of technology, policy, and behaviour in reducing GHG emissions. Furthermore, it is a valuable reference tool for businesses transitioning towards green technology solutions. Featuring an interactive and user-friendly web interface, MCAS empowers users to simulate different behaviours, navigate technological options, select potential pathways, and identify sector-specific roles.

    It also offers a common language for discussion on climate change mitigation measures. It provides the means to plan and visualise decarbonisation pathways and make a comparative analysis. MGTC will actively engage potential users through events dedicated to introducing and demonstrating MCAS as an educational and awareness communication tool. This outreach will primarily target industry stakeholders, universities, research institutes, non-governmental organisations, and the public.

    GCEO of MGTC, Ts. Shamsul Bahar Mohd Nor, expressed enthusiasm about the future of MCAS, saying, “MGTC has strategic plans to collaborate with universities in developing educational modules centered around MCAS and integrating it into the university curriculum. Additionally, MCAS remains open for further research contributions, aiming to facilitate more informed and rational decisions on various pathways to mitigate GHG emissions in Malaysia.”

    Her Excellency Ailsa Terry CMG, British High Commissioner to Malaysia, welcomes the rebrand and launch of the Malaysia carbon pathway calculator – MCAS, and said, “The UK is working closely with international partners like Malaysia to address the global climate challenges. Since 2012, the UK has committed £6 millions of International Climate Finance to the international community to support the creation of their respective 2050 Calculators. So far, we have helped create 19 national and 6 regional Calculators which have been used to develop NDCs and action plans, raise awareness and inform long-term strategies.

    “The launch of MCAS is a culmination of our knowledge sharing and technical collaboration with Malaysia, and I am pleased that it plays a role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions across key sectors in Malaysia. This is part of our ongoing ambitious partnership with Malaysia to address the shared challenge of climate change and energy transition.”

    Mott MacDonald’s 2050 Calculator Programme Country Manager in Malaysia, Danny Giam, who has overseen the development of MCAS said “Mott MacDonald is delighted and excited to see the launch of the Malaysia Carbon Calculator (MCAS) come to fruition.
