  • A Global Stage for New Voices: Winners of Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2025 Revealed

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards 2025 has unveiled this year’s winning talents at a celebratory ceremony held at the legendary Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City. Hosted by Emmy-award winner Denny Directo, the event marked the third edition of the prestigious global short film competition that continues to spotlight bold and emerging voices in cinema. An initiative by Creo and sponsored by Sony, the program aims to accelerate the careers of filmmakers with fresh narratives from every corner of the world.

This year’s winners were chosen from more than 11,750 film submissions representing over 7,500 filmmakers across 158 countries and territories. Taking the top honors in their respective categories were Rossana Montoya from Colombia for Fiction, Juliet Klottrup from the United Kingdom for Non-Fiction, Chilean duo Santiago O’Ryan and José Navarro for Animation, and Hayder Hoozeer and Franz Böhm representing the United Kingdom and Germany for the Student category. These filmmakers captivated the jury with their powerful storytelling, technical innovation, and cultural perspectives.

The jury panel brought together prominent figures in cinema including writer and director Minhal Baig, President of 3000 Pictures Elizabeth Gabler, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Jason Reitman, and acclaimed director Justin Chadwick, who led the jury as Chair. Together, they assessed creative excellence across diverse genres and backgrounds, selecting winners who showed vision and originality that transcended borders.

Speaking on behalf of the jury, Chadwick remarked that this year’s winners are reshaping the language of cinema. Their passion, fearlessness, and authenticity signal a bright future for storytelling. The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards not only acknowledge their talent but also serve as a platform to empower new voices who will redefine the filmmaking landscape in years to come.

In addition to global recognition, winners were invited to an exclusive four-day industry immersion at Sony Pictures Studios from 2 to 5 June 2025. The program offered in-depth workshops, masterclasses, and networking opportunities with industry experts. Filmmakers participated in sessions that included cinematography insights, script development, deal-making strategies, technology showcases, and sound design essentials. Beyond mentorship, each winner also received cash prizes and top-tier Sony Digital Imaging equipment.

Among the most striking works was Rossana Montoya’s ‘My Demon’, a gripping one-shot narrative capturing a couple’s emotional turbulence on the way to the hospital. Juliet Klottrup’s ‘Travelling Home’ touched hearts with its lyrical portrayal of a Romany Traveller’s connection to heritage, captured on 16mm film. Santiago O’Ryan and José Navarro’s ‘Hermanos Casablanca’ used haunting animation to explore family and fear under the Pinochet regime. In the Student category, ‘Rock Paper Scissors’ by Hayder Hoozeer and Franz Böhm portrayed a gripping tale of survival inside a warzone hospital, grounded in a true story and visualized with intense precision.

As the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards continues to grow, the 2026 edition has already been confirmed, with entries opening in July 2025.
