A Visual Feast: 21 Dancers Headline Spectacular ‘Ramayana’ Performance in KL

A grand ensemble of 21 dancers will headline Ayodhya Putra, a spectacular new Bharatanatyam production set to bring the ancient epic Ramayana to life at Kala Mandapam in Brickfields. Scheduled for June 28, 2026, this landmark performance by the Mahavidya Dance Theatre promises a visual feast that combines monumental choreography, sophisticated live music, and a profound commitment to community welfare.

The production utilizes its extensive 21-member cast to translate the timeless narrative of Prince Rama, Princess Sita, and the triumph of light over darkness into a powerful theatrical experience. Executed through the rigorous and highly expressive Vazhuvoor style of Bharatanatyam, the performance aims to make classical art accessible to modern audiences. To facilitate a deeper engagement with the narrative, the staging will incorporate a digital screen displaying English subtitles, ensuring the emotional depth of the story is universally understood. This presentation honors the epic’s enduring significance across Southeast Asia, where it has historically integrated into regional cultures as Malaysia’s Hikayat Seri Rama, Thailand’s Ramakien, and Indonesia’s Kakawin Ramayana.

Conceptualized and choreographed by Mahavidya Dance Theatre founder Sheela Raghavan, Ayodhya Putra will feature segments of Suddha Nrittam, considered the pinnacle of “pure dance.” In these highly technical passages, the headlining dancers will demonstrate exceptional precision and stamina, moving in synchronization to the complex and thunderous patterns of live percussion rather than a traditional melody. Elevating the choreography is a distinguished live musical ensemble performing the works of revered composers Papanasam Sivan and Nirmala Raghavan. The ensemble features Brahmashri J.J. Prathap Sharma on mridangam, Aravind on percussion, Suganya Jegathesan Sharma providing vocals, and Hariraam Tingyuan Lam on violin.

In addition to its artistic merits, Ayodhya Putra serves a significant social purpose. All proceeds and public support from the performance will directly benefit Mahavidya Dance Theatre’s philanthropic initiative, which provides classical dance education completely free of charge to children from underprivileged and marginalized families. Attendance therefore offers patrons an opportunity to appreciate a world-class cultural showcase while contributing to the sustainability of community arts education.

The performance will convene on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Kala Mandapam, Scott Road, Brickfields. Corporate partners, cultural enthusiasts, and members of the public are invited to experience this exceptional cultural event.
